Washington DC 1/6/21
Tens of Thousands of ralliers gather today in the Washington mall to protest the election results and "stop the steal". We moved into the mall, we headed toward the Washington Monument. Thousands had already gathered but little did we know just how many more were to come. The crowd was a culmination of your average maga Supporters, as well as neoconfederates, service men and women, and proud boys. The Rally was surprisingly diverse, as one attendee made sure to point out to us the numerous Asians present, trying to prove the validity of the movement by stating "the Chinese know. They know what is to come and they want to get on board." This comment was fairly mild in comparison to some of the other racially insensitive comments heard today.
The early hours of the Rally were quite calm once the crowd began to settle. Attendants were seemingly underwhelmed by the lack of confrontation presented by any counter protest. This was evident in any and all attempts to start conflict with obscenities shouted at us. However the tides changes almost immediately as Trump took the stage and began to address the eager masses.
Immediately following his speech, the newly riled protesters took to the streets with a clear goal: to reach the capitol building and apply pressure to the decision being made inside. However, upon reaching the capitol, the situation escalated within minutes.
With the lack of any present security, the once boastful and self proclaimed "peaceful-protesters" turned violent by kicking down the gates and charging the lawn. As sirens blared throughout the city, a dystopian scene unfolded around us. On the lawn people played music, shouted into megaphones and rehearsed shants while ahead Proud boys were scaling the walls and smashing in windows. It didn't take long before the capitol was completely swarmed. People stood along the ledge, climbed scaffolding and pushed further inside.
The consequence of today's events will only be known as time passes. I urge all in the DMV area to stay safe and lie low until the dust settles
