Photography As Therapy

Photography As Therapy Therapeutically, the act of creating and sharing a photograph puts the focus on the picture rather than the person, which provides a feeling of safety.

In the Photography as Therapy program, individuals with spinal cord injury are learning photography as a means of creative expression and a way to channel negative emotion into something positive. Photography is an ideal tool to engage and inspire people who are struggling with their lives, as it combines instant, tangible gratification with the potential to rework an image to perfection, and then

share it with others to get feedback and provoke reaction. In this way, the picture becomes a meaningful starting point for emotional healing and the development of more positive self-esteem. Our program is comprised of amazing students living with spinal cord injury. We’ve given each of them a camera and asked them to show us the world through their eyes. Under the tutelage of professional photographer Michael Ziegler, the results have been astonishing. Their images are thought provoking, heart wrenching, and above all, thoroughly unique in their perspective.

In any creative work like photography, it’s important to remember that part of getting a great outcome will require being okay with the bad outcomes - those are the times where you learn the lessons that help you sharpen your expertise. Stay tuned this week to see how we put this into play with our upcoming photo competition where students will be challenged to re-create photos that they want to improve upon using the skills acquired from@this years program!

Rancho Pix Spotlight 📸 - Street photography from Istanbul, Turkey, taken by our instructor and long time member of the Rancho Pix team - read the full background story below as written by Michael Ziegler himself 👇✨

This was taken many, many years ago when was on my Rotary Fellowship year that turned into
three years living on a shoestring budget, doing odd jobs, sometimes sleeping on park
benches or in cardboard boxes after watching others doing it. Northern Scotland to eastern
Iran. Film was carried, both unused and exposed, from country to country until it got to be too
much and I mailed it to a friend back in the States. One had to be very sparing when shooting-
-every frame cost a specific amount--film, processing, proofs--and you couldn't just shoot
non-stop like you can now with digital. I may have taken only one more frame of this great
backstreet Istanbul setting, and even though I thought I got the picture, I didn't really know
until I borrowed a school darkroom somewhere in Germany and took a peek at the film with a
loupe. Then it was back to more roaming, more people to meet and photograph. It's one of my
all-time favorite images, and surely a book on my Istanbul photographs will someday happen
but only if someone takes away my camera.
