Middle River Farms continues traditions as they open for their 17th year
With more than 20 varieties of pumpkins available to be picked, Middle River Farms opened their ‘pick your own’ pumpkin patch for the season.
Michelle and Greg Martin purchased Middle River Farms in Weyers Cave, Virginia, in 2009 and began planting and selling pumpkins from their fields. In June, Michelle, Greg, and their kids head outside and plant their field for mid-September, when the pumpkins are ready to be picked. This year, they planted the field that is 11 acres, with over 30,000 pumpkin seeds. On September 17, they opened up their farm stand and prepared for customers to come and pick their pumpkins.
The farm stand is open every day until sunset. Michelle, along with her parents, Bruce and Mary Lou Shirkey, is at the stand every weekend. For $40, customers can fill a whole wagon with as many pumpkins as they can fit. A mailbox, marked as the “Honor Box,” is on location for people to make payments when the family is not there during the week.
Michelle spends her time at the patch speaking to customers and getting to know the families that return year after year. One family in particular has been coming to the patch for the last 10 years. “We are here making family traditions,” Martin said. Another family has been returning for years with their children and still comes back each year, even though their children have graduated and left home.
Besides picking pumpkins, there are photo opportunities and fall games for people of all ages. Middle River Farms pumpkin patch will remain open until they run out of pumpkins. Martin says this could be as early as mid-October or run until the end of the month.
