Aleka Artemis Munroe has always needed to express herself with words. At age 10, she began photographing with her Papou’s Brownie camera, recording reality and writing poems expressing her perspective. Aleka’s linguistics and foreign languages education etched words into her soul. After careers in banking and teaching, and raising a theatrical and musical family where words were essential tools, h

er fifties hit hard with the chaos of a failed adoption and multiplying autoimmune illness. Her creative and comedic family and friends, and prayer, pulled her through. Aleka believes God gives us the strength to get through pain, sorrow and suffering, to live, love, laugh, and especially to reach out to others who are struggling to choose between despair and courage, connection and disconnection. Mindfulness training sparked a renewal of using photography and words to envision alternate interpretations of scenes in her limited physical world with her camera lens and lyrical mediations. This developed into Compasspoints: maxims for clearing the chaos in our cages. Aleka is finishing a photographic book entitled “I am Water”, an allegorical tale of being the water that constantly flows on toward the unknown of the ocean, despite the obstacles in its path.

Rebecca Proctor, owner of The Art Center at 1 Washington St in Dover, NH, explores and enjoys this tongue-in-cheek, juried 3D art piece submitted for the show Art Across America, opening on July 13, 2026. It looks like an edible cake, but it's not. Instead, it's a social commentary on 250 years of the United States of America, with each tiny candle inscribed with an event in our history, both good and bad. Mark July 13 at 6pm on your calendar to experience many artists and media that communicate "America."

Project Manager Jamie Stevens leads a tour of the Cochecho Waterfront Development Project, highlighting recent progress throughout the site, including Nebi Park, the pavilion and plaza area, riverwalk pathways, paddle dock, public art, landscaping, lighting, seating, stormwater features, and shoreline restoration.

The tour provides a closer look at the public amenities taking shape along the Cochecho River, as well as the ongoing work to complete the project. Please note that some areas remain active construction zones and are not yet open to the public. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project will be held Tuesday, July 14.

I am a proud member of The Art Center Dover and am grateful to Rebecca Proctor for mentoring me through my understanding what it takes to become a professional artist. Having a studio there means learning even more from the other artists. If you are look for a special place, I highly recommend The Art Center.

The Community Trail Advisory Committee invites young artists to help shape a new public art installation along the rural section of the Community Trail. The selected design will become a permanent feature of the trail, contributing to the character and creativity of our community. The winning artist will receive $200 in Dover Dollars, plus up to $150 in supplies to bring their vision to life.

Proposals are due by Friday, July 3. Submissions may be emailed to City Planner Erin Bassegio at [email protected], delivered to the Planning Department Office at City Hall during business hours, or mailed to: City of Dover, c/o Erin Bassegio, 288 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.
