🎬 Practical Filmmaking Tip: Shoot for the Edit

One of the easiest ways to help your editor is simple: start early and end late.

Begin recording a few seconds before the action starts and keep rolling for a few seconds after it finishes.

Those extra seconds — often called handles — give you room to make cleaner cuts, transitions, and edits later.

Don’t stop recording the instant the action is over. Your editor will thank you.

🎬 Practical Filmmaking Tip: Create More Depth

Putting your subject right against a wall can make an otherwise good shot feel flat.

Move them several feet away from the background when possible. That separation helps create depth, gives the background a softer look, and helps your subject stand out.

A little distance can make a surprisingly big visual difference.

🎬 Practical Filmmaking Tip: Check the Background

Before you hit record, take a few seconds to look behind your subject.

Lamps, poles, plants, signs, and other objects can easily become distracting — especially when they appear to be growing right out of someone’s head!

Sometimes moving the camera or your subject just a few inches is all it takes to clean up the shot.

🎬 Practical Filmmaking Tip: Where the Eyes Fall Matters

Where you place your subject’s eyes can make a big difference in how natural a shot feels.

For interviews and medium close-ups, positioning the eyes near the upper third of the frame usually creates a more comfortable, balanced composition.

The eyes help guide the frame.
