From Surprise Proposal to Secret Vows: A Wedding Story Full of Unexpected Joy

What started as a surprise proposal blossomed into a love story filled with spontaneity, charm, and a little mischief.

It began with a casual walk exploring the gardens at Filoli on a warm Autumn day. When Alessandro wouldn’t pose for a photo, Amanda turned to him only to see him on one knee popping the question in front of the koi pond. Surprise was followed by a nod then ‘yes’ as the joyful tears fell.

They decided that they didn’t want a long engagement or a big traditional wedding. Instead, something intimate, authentic—and fun. So they came up with a plan: a “pre-elopement” party. Something relaxed, where they could celebrate with close friends and family before sneaking away to elope. Or so everyone thought.

Guests arrived on a warm spring morning to a quaint sunken garden surrounded by lavender and modern white barn. The couple’s mothers greeted everyone with envelopes that were to be opened on the spot letting them know what was actually happening. Shock and surprise was quickly followed by joy and tears. Guests then grabbed a cappuccino or latte at the coffee cart and then gathered on the lawn.

The ceremony was short and sweet followed by one huge group photo of everyone. Games of corn hole and Jenga were enjoyed on the patio while other guests sipped more coffee and indulged in platters of cannolis and charcuterie.

It was unexpected. It was deeply personal. And it was exactly what the couple wanted.

Engaged! 💍 This surprise proposal was months in the making with many texts, emails and phone calls to work out a date, a location, and how this was all going to go down. It was almost spoiled at the last minute, as I was hiding behind a large wooden door when the couple walked by on the way to the pond, but thankfully she didn’t see me! 😅 I was so nervous! As she turned to take a photo, he knelt down to propose and I captured it all as a few bystanders applauded! ✔️🌟
