He has spent 40 years perfecting his life’s work, an artistic and soulful approach to portraiture called Soulmarks, and teaching this philosophy to others. Joe’s instinctive talent and magnetic charisma keep

him in high demand as both a photographic consultant and lecturer around the globe. In addition to the Joe Craig Luxury Group (JCLG), a line of portrait studios exclusively available on luxury cruise lines and at destination resorts, Joe Craig reserves time to shoot a limited amount of private sessions and to present lectures worldwide. Every artist who photographs in a JCLG licensed studio trains personally with Joe Craig at the Soulmarks Art Center, which has been home to the Soulmarks experience for 40 years. Artists travel from all over the world to Dexter, Missouri, where they undergo intensive training to learn specialized photography skills and become deeply immersed in the unique Soulmarks approach. After completing their training, artists are able to produce stunning portraits that capture the essence of every person who comes before the lens. He also dedicates time to the Soulmarks Foundation, which works to gift portrait sessions to those who could not otherwise afford the experience and could most benefit. Barry Urhahn.

Barry Urhahn has spent his whole working life in agriculture, and he has seen it from just about every side. He came up through ag retail, spent years as a seed man for NK Seed, and these days he is in sales for Greenpoint Ag — the person a lot of farmers around here talk to about what to put in the ground. But it isn't all advice and order sheets. Alongside the day job, Barry farms row crop of his own, together with his uncle.

That is a particular kind of life — to know the business from the counter and the sales route, and still want your own hands in your own dirt at the end of it, working ground with family. Farming gets into people that way, and it does not let go.

Amy Ressel. Charleston, Mississippi County.

For the past ten years, Amy Ressel has been the one who keeps the Charleston Greenpoint Ag location running. The billing, the inventory, the hundred small things that have to be right before a farmer can walk in and get what the season needs — that is her, day in and day out. It is the kind of work nobody notices until it isn't done, and she has done it, steadily, for a decade.

Farming doesn't only happen in the field. It runs on a long line of people who keep the whole thing moving, and Joe Craig has widened the Farm Project to take them in too — the people around the edges of the crop whose work makes the crop possible. Dale Glenn. Charleston, Mississippi County.

Dale Glenn has farmed his whole life. It started as a boy, working alongside his father, and grew into a life on the land beside his brother Charlie — the two of them running Glenn Farms together, the way brothers who came up in the dirt tend to. When Charlie passed, Dale carried the operation on, with his wife Vanessa beside him and a farm crew he is the first to praise. He has kept it going through the hardest kind of loss, without ever letting go of the ground the family built.

Ask anyone around here and they will tell you the same thing: Dale is about as good a man as you will ever meet. That is its own kind of legacy — the sort that never shows up in acres or yields, but in how a person carries themselves across a lifetime of work.

Clay Dugan.

Clay Dugan is a farm hand for Charles Moxley Farms — one of the people the whole operation actually runs on. He is the hands in the field: the early starts, the long days, the work that gets done whether anyone is watching or not. Farming has always leaned on people like Clay, and it always will.

Most of that work goes unrecorded. The crop comes in, the season turns, and the ones who did the doing rarely get set down anywhere that lasts. That is exactly what Joe Craig made the Farm Project to change. Billy Taylor.

Billy Taylor works the ground for Dale Glenn at Glenn Farms — and when that day is done, he is out farming on his own, alongside Kyle Duke. Two men, building something of their own together. That is how a lot of farming actually gets started: not handed a finished operation, but working someone else's by day and putting your own together on the side, one season at a time, with someone you trust.

It takes a particular kind of person to farm all day and then go and farm some more. But that is the pull of the land — once it is in you, there is no clocking out of it.

Joe Pattengill. Scott County, Missouri.

Joe Pattengill has come at farming from just about every side of it. He spent time in retail ag, then ran the Charleston potato operation for Black Gold Farms — one of the largest potato growers in the state. Then, in the early nineties, he did the thing a lot of farm kids mean to and never quite get back to: he came home, and took up running the family farm, Northcut Farms, himself.

That is a particular kind of pull — to know the whole business inside out, from the retail counter to the row, and still choose your own family's ground in the end. Northcut Farms has been his to run for more than thirty years now.
