There was a moment when I thought my photography career was over.

The day before I moved to Dallas, I got fired from my corporate job. I wasn’t scared because I had built a successful photography business in Phoenix. I thought moving here meant I’d finally be a full-time entrepreneur.

But it didn’t happen that way.

The clients weren’t coming, and eventually I had to go back to corporate just to survive. That felt like failure. I kept asking myself, “If I was good enough there, why am I not good enough here?”

For a while, I gave up on photography.

Then one day I realized… why was I letting slow growth convince me to quit something I love?

So I picked my camera back up.

Today I’m still building, still growing, and still believing in the dream. The timeline changed—but the dream didn’t.

When I moved to Dallas in 2022, I wasn’t just starting over in a new city, I was trying to figure out where I fit in a crowded photography market.

Everything changed when I started attending photography conferences. Watching photographers teach their craft made me realize I didn’t just have photos to share, I had knowledge worth sharing, too.

So I started saying yes. I applied to teach, began sharing the lighting techniques I’d spent years developing, and eventually created an ebook on my low-light photography process.

Looking back, I realize I wasn’t meant to compete with everyone else. I was meant to lean into what made my work different.

Sometimes your biggest opportunity isn’t learning something new. It’s finally recognizing the value of what you’ve known all along.

What’s one thing you’ve overlooked about yourself that might actually be your greatest strength?

For a long time, I thought growing my business meant looking and sounding like everyone else. The biggest thing that kept my business small had nothing to do with my camera.

The shift happened when I stopped trying to blend in and started showing up as myself.

Now, that’s exactly what I want for my clients.

Father’s Day looks different for me these days.

My dad passed away in 2021, and like many people who have lost a parent, I find myself reaching for photographs because that’s all I have other than memories in my mind. Not because they take away the grief, but because they give me something tangible to hold onto. A smile. A moment. A memory that would have otherwise faded with time.

As a photographer, I spend a lot of time helping people create images of themselves and the people they love. But today, I’m simply a daughter who is grateful for every photo I have of her father.

If you’re fortunate enough to still have your dad, your parents, grandparents, or the people who helped raise you, don’t wait for a “special occasion” to take the picture. Don’t wait until everyone loses weight, gets a new outfit, or finds the perfect time.

Take the photo.

Year after year, keep taking them.

One day, those images become more than pictures. They become stories, reminders, connections, and pieces of people we never want to forget.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, father figures, and to those of us carrying our fathers in our hearts today. ♥️

Dad, I miss you every day.

As we approach Juneteenth, I find myself thinking about freedom in all of its forms.

Not just the freedom that history reminds us to honor, but the freedom to be fully ourselves. The freedom to take up space. To rest. To dream bigger. To tell our stories in our own voices and on our own terms.

That’s one of the things I love most about photography. It gives us a chance to preserve who we are in this moment—not who the world expects us to be, but who we truly are.

“Free.” Simple. Powerful. Necessary.

This week, I’m reflecting on the generations who fought for freedom, the progress we’ve made, and the work that still remains. And I’m celebrating the beauty, resilience, creativity, and joy that continue to thrive within our communities every single day.

Happy Monday!

Every now and then I like to reintroduce myself for the new people who have joined this page.

I’m Annette, a portrait and brand photographer based in Dallas. I work with entrepreneurs, professionals, and individuals who want images that feel natural, authentic, and true to who they are. Whether it’s personal branding, professional portraits, creative lifestyle sessions, or special events, my goal is always the same: to create photographs that tell your story and make a lasting impression.

When I’m not behind the camera, I’m usually reading a good thriller, watching one of my favorite shows, or editing photos while convincing myself I don’t need another piece of camera gear.

If you’re new here, welcome. And if you’ve been following along for a while, thank you for being here. I appreciate the support and look forward to sharing more of my work with you.

Tell me, what’s your favorite pastime when you’re not grinding!?

I think one of the reasons I fell in love with photography is because it taught me to slow down. Sometimes a photograph simply exists because something felt beautiful in that moment.

Photography has taught me to pay attention to things I probably would’ve walked past years ago. And honestly, I think that’s one of the greatest gifts it’s given me.

The longer I looked at this image, the less it felt like a portrait and the more it felt like a piece of visual storytelling.

Black and white photography has a way of stripping away distractions. Without color, you’re left with expression, shape, light, texture, and emotion.

The best photographs don’t always tell you exactly what to think. Sometimes they simply invite you to stay awhile and decide for yourself.
