I wrote this in June 2019.

“I keep trying to prepare myself for that last time before I have my mastectomy. I’m sitting in the fitting room at work, wiping the tears from my eyes just thinking of the last time I will be breastfeeding my baby boy. Choosing to get rid of a body part before it has the chance to destroy you is a choice I didn’t think I would ever have to make. But here I am.”

There was so much grief wrapped up in me choosing to have my mastectomy. Grief for what I was losing and gratitude for what I had been given.

Today is the last day of National Breastfeeding Month and I wanted to share a little more of that journey.

Am I comfortable in my body? Yes.

Am I always comfortable letting my mastectomy be seen? No.

And that doesn’t mean I’m going backwards. It means I’m allowed to choose what feels right for me that day. I can be confident in my body and still have moments that feel vulnerable. I can be proud of my body and still have moments where I want to cover it.

I brought my top because I wasn’t sure how I’d feel once I was in that environment. And then I walked around the water park without it. Maybe that’s the point though. I didn’t need to prove anything. I just needed to know that I had a choice 🦋
