Mackenzie Massey Photography I am an engineer by day but photography is a great escape from the day-to-day happenings.

Most of my work is focused on the outside world: underwater & landscape though occasionally I get into some other types of locations too.

Wacked Out Wednesday

Another throwback to a couple months while back home and Buffy, my brother 's bulldog puppy, was going crazy playing with her bowl. She ended up knocking it under a stool (that was holding up some fence to keep her in the living room) so she chases it under the still but then somewhat gets stuck under it & between it and the fence. She was absolutely out of her mind playing with this bowl but she also tuckered out quickly.

Accidentally found this janolus barbarensis nudibranch a few weeks ago at Wharf 2. I started my swim back to shore along the wall when I glanced over and it was just right there. Then I remembered telling me about these super cool nudibranchs along the wall that she was so excited to and I realized these were them. Sometimes dumb luck is better than skill 🤣

and I went to Elkhorn Slough a few weeks ago to see if we could find some otters and we found some in the outlet of the river as it goes into the ocean. This little guy was just hanging out minding his own business and we watched him for a while. All of a sudden I see some commotion and realized a sea lion came up right next to him and I don't know if the sea lion intended to screw with the otter or not but it freaked out the otter and I just barely caught this single snapshot of the moment.

Well it's time for bed...

Tonight I finally got around to working on some photos from the past month or 2 that I just had not gotten to. Taking the photos often is so much more fun than going through and making the tweaks you want to make but there is the plus side of going through those photos: you get to relive the moments of taking them.

For example, my brother's ( ) bulldog Buffy was tired after a long day of playing and cozied up with my mom on the couch to take a nap with the setting sun just barely lighting up her face a bit.

Another shot from the PNW Shootout a few weeks ago.

I was diving Three Tree Point with , Bill, and Christian and was swimming back up towards shore into the shallows to do my safety stop. As you can see it is mostly a sand/gravel bottom so not a whole bunch of wide angle opportunities so I was just kind of putzing around when I came across this gunnel in some kelp. So I figured I would make lemonade out of lemons and play with my snoot for wide angle. While certainly not the most breathtaking photo, it was fun to play around and see what I could get.

A bit slow at posting things but better late than never.

A couple weeks ago I got to join in on the PNW Shootout organized by & thanks to a last minute work trip and some friends telling me about the Shootout the day before I was to fly up. I very much went into it just looking to get more dives in up north, have some fun, and meet some new divers and all that definitely happened but I also took home 3rd place in Advanced Wide Angle Traditional with this shot of a boat at Three Tree Point.

I was hoping to get more dives in for the Shootout but because of my work schedule, I was only able to get a total of 2 dives in and only on the last day so I did 1 macro dive and 1 wide angle to cover my bases. Luckily on this last dive of the day with & Bill, they showed me this sunken boat. I took a few shots and luckily 1 of them was swimming past the wreck and I got a decent shot. I ended up not thinking much about this image but submitted it and was surprised it place but looking back on it after the fact, I kinda like it. It was by chance that my dive buddy was shining their light this way and my strobes illuminated the wreck in a way that made it look like it was their flash light and it just kind of had a nice simplicity to it. So while I was surprised it placed, I'm glad it did because it got me to look at it again to see what could have made it place.

Thanks again to the Seattle dive crew for some awesome dives and congrats to the rest of the winners & participants! .diver .eric_ plus everyone else I'm surely forgetting

From earlier this year when and I ventured up to Seattle to go dive with , & .eric_ to find some lumpies! Plus got to meet some awesome drivers like .diver and many more. I realized I didn't post as many of these lumpy pics as I thought I did so I'm going to start posting some of these older pics.

Another 4th of July fireworks shot from my parents' front yard. It is super convenient that we have a great view of the fireworks from their front yard. The 2nd best show of the night is watching all the people that park on the road in front of their house all walk up the hill to watch the fireworks > walk back down > then sit in traffic. You can also tell who has been doing this for years & knows the routine vs the newbies who have no idea what kind of bad decisions they've made like trying to drive through the center of town after the fireworks rather than driving away. And we just get to sit there, eat, drink, maybe have a fire, easily walk into the house to use the bathroom, not fight any crowds, and just enjoy the show(s).

Another shot from the photo walk at Asilomar hosted by & . This one was a test of patience. Finding the right shutter speed, waiting for just the right wave, hitting the shutter at just the right time. But eventually I was able to capture this waterfall-into-clouds-like look as the wave water trickled down the rocks. I also liked how it even somewhat looks like the water for the waterfall is coming out of nowhere.

Woohoo! It's Friyay!!! I was taking photos of Buffy, my brother's puppy, and she was being very feisty & trying to nip at my ankles. So I ended up rolling her on her back and was rubbing/tickling her tummy while still trying to take photos. So it might not be the most technically awesome photo, it still makes me laugh at how she looks.
