Returned recently from a wonderful trip to Panama. There’s a lot there besides a canal. The forest there is some of the least hospitable but most amazing I have ever seen. This is the only place on the Transamerican highway where the road couldn’t be built. You can drive from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego except for the impossible Darien gap in Panama. Rugged and dangerous terrain indeed. Thousands of people walk through it every day to seek a better life to the north. It’s also the corridor that connected the wildlife of North America to South America and changed the ecology of both. People, ships, animals and oceans all seem to squeeze into it’s tiny width.

Heavy snowfall makes for tough hunting for hawks like this red tail. Small prey like mice are in the subnivean spaces under the snow.

I photographed this one as it absolutely devoured a rabbit it caught. It was struck that it ate most of it in one sitting and came@back shortly afterwards and finished its meal.

A typical eastern cottontail weighs about 3 lbs. a typical adult red tail weighs 3 lbs as well.

I spent some time thinking how hard core life is for a creature that can catch and consume nearly its own body weight in raw flesh and then fly off to patrol the skies in subzero temperatures to do it again.

I was in Patagonia recently and wanted to share a few landscapes from the trip.

Patagonia was full of surprises. Somehow nothing was quite what I expected. I guess that’s why we travel. To renew a sense of wonder at the beauty of our world.

Open spaces, towering mountains, abundant marine life. It was a fascinating look at the far end of our hemisphere.
