The San Juan Mountains have always been my favorite corner of Colorado, and last week I had a chance to photograph during prime time aspen gold and a fresh blanket of snow on the peaks. This week I'll be dropping some favs from the trip, starting with this one of the amazing curved aspen trees!

I came across this idyllic waterfall on a recent trip to the mountains of Summit County, Colorado. With the sun already set behind the mountains lighting up the sky, and the waterfall in full shade with waning light, I made one exposure for the waterfall and one for the sky. Then I manually composited them as two layers in Photoshop, doing minor enhancements to bring out some foreground detail and color. Very happy with the end result!

The Great Sand Dunes definitely has an otherworldly feel to it - miles and miles of barrren sprawling dunes, tucked up against high mountain peaks, and low arid valley. Here's visual confirmation of that otherworldly feel, and also helps explains a geographical connectedness within our solar system:
