I attended a birth this week, and thought to myself: this is probably one of the most intense things she’s ever done…and also: she is going to feel so invincible when she reaches the other side. Birth is hard. Even the fastest births (like this one) require so much vulnerability, courage, and inner strength. I sometimes wish birth could just be easy and not painful, but I believe we gain so much by walking through the fire and meeting our baby on the other side. Also: this dog. Easily one of my favorite parts of homebirths.

It’s time for an important introduction: I first met Miranda when she hired me to document the birth of their third baby. I remember sitting with her and her husband, and being struck by her depth and presence…something that I sometimes I only see after a person has experienced the true depth of both love and loss. I learned more about Miranda, her story, and her births. She had lost her first baby girl: a stillbirth. And then she had her beautiful son…and now they were expecting their second daughter. Miranda had walked through so much already, and I understood why I had recognized such a deep reservoir of both experience and compassion.

Shortly after: I got to witness her bravely and beautifully bring that baby girl into the world. It was the most beautiful birth, and I still feel so lucky I got to be part of it!

What happened next? Miranda fell even more in love with birth. She trained as a doula underneath me. She began utilizing her amazing photography skills in the birth space. She took care of so many of my clients during my pregnancy and maternity leave…and now?? Well we’re continuing to work together in this new year and new season of my life and business.

Miranda is incredible. She’s a gifted photographer and storyteller. She’s also an incredible advocate and doula. She’s held both me and my clients over these last months, and I couldn’t feel more grateful that we get to continue to support each other in the months ahead.

So meet Miranda ❤️ You’ll see our work together in the year ahead as we both attend births and take care of my clients as a team. I am so grateful I get to work with her. And I’m so grateful our relationship has changed and deepened over the years. And just look at these images!?! Isn’t she incredible?

I’m getting ready to teach a new cohort of birth workers this February, and I’m humbled and excited to help more folks learn how to take these life-changing images…and also how to advocate for change in all birth spaces and locations. If you’ve thought about doing this…I’d love to support you. ❤️

These are practices that I think all providers, regardless of birth location, could consider adopting. So many vilify homebirth in our culture, and yet I see some of the safest, gentlest, and most peaceful births…happen at home. Not everyone is a good candidate for home, but there is still wisdom in the way these midwives approach the age old journey that is birth.

I hate to use the word trend because really this isn’t about what’s trendy and much more about what’s best for parent/baby. What are you hoping to see this year?

So yep, I totally posted this last night with the year 2026 instead of 2025, which about sums up how I’m doing right now. But then again, as I reflect on this year, I am so grateful to do this work. To enter so many different birth spaces and to witness these stories.

Is experience everything? No! But it’s important. And if anyone is preaching that there’s one right way to have a baby? They almost always have attended just a handful of births. The wisest providers and teachers often walk and talk about birth with humility, respect, and awe.

This was the worst family photo shoot imaginable. The three year old ran of screaming, I ran off crying, and my middle daughter began lamenting that we weren’t going to have a family picture for our Christmas cards. Somehow was still able to pull this off and make us look beautiful. But truly: this has been the hardest and most humbling season of my entire life. I do not feel like we are thriving, and I’m not sure if we ever will again! But we are doing it, and trying to learn how to love them well. I won’t say I haven’t questioned the decision to have this many kids. But on the other hand, watching them laugh and love each other is truly one of my greatest gifts. Whether you have one kid or ten: it’s hard and confronting but also so beautiful at the same time.

There’s a lot more I want to say, but this is a start. And I hope we’re entering into a season of compassion and acceptance of all different types and ways we meet our babies.

I am lucky to witness birth transfers that are mostly positive, peaceful, and full of mutual respect. But I know this isn’t the case everywhere. This was a really beautiful and fast VBAC that took place in a freestanding birth center, an ambulance, and a University hospital.

And then the elevator actually stopped working for a brief few moments, and I thought we might get stuck on the elevator AND have a baby. We had a midwife on deck though, so it would have been totally fine. This was such a gorgeous, surprising, and powerful VBAC. Whenever I go to this hospital now…I always remember this story.

Was this my hardest birth? Yes. Were there moments where I thought waking my kids up was a really bad idea? Yep. Do I regret doing it now that the birth dust has settled? Absolutely not. They got to witness not only the joy of birth but also the struggle. And at the end of the day, I want my kids to know that we can get through hard things.
