Rocky Mountain Goat at the .  It was a very bright cloudless day and the sun was creating some very harsh contrasty light.  But this guy was standing in the shade which really evened the light out.  Notice in the 2nd photo how bright the white fur is in the direct sunlight.

I like when zoos have local species in their care.  You get the chance to learn about animals in the area where the zoo is.

Walk-in bird aviaries like this one in the Africa Walks exhibit at the provide wonderful opportunities to get photos of birds.  There are no barriers between you and birds.  You get to pick your backgrounds and some have elevated platforms where you can be at eye level with the birds.  Take your time in these exhibits.  It can take a few minutes before you really see the birds in their habitat.  With patience I was able to follow this bird working on its nest.   It was swooping in, doing a little work and then it was gone.  But it was doing it over and over so I could find my spot and prepare to capture it working.

I'm not sure what type of bird this is since it didn't match any of the signs in the exhibit.  I'm not sure if it was young and hadn't developed all the color yet or what.  This is a great question to ask a zoo keeper or volunteer.  Anyone know what type of bird this is?

Green Tree Python at the moving about and showing off his tongue.  I really like catching them right after the water has been spraying in their enclosure.  Their colors seem to really pop and the water droplets add another texture to the scales.

Friendship abounds between these two Asian Elephants at the .  Jake and Chuck are playing follow the leader in .  The photo is about both of them.  Normally,  I love using shallow depth of field to separate my subjects from the background, but when you have multiple subjects an elephants length apart, use a smaller aperture to make sure they are both in focus. Remember aperture controls how much depth of field we get in our photos.  In this photo, the foreground is blurry, almost to the point of removing the cable of the exhibit.....almost.    But I've stopped down enough to get both their faces and bodies in focus.  Adjust your aperture and learn how much depth of field your lenses provide at varying distances to get the results you like.

The 2nd photos of the flamingos uses a much shorted depth of field because the front flamingo is my subject.

Most zoos are open year round and when the weather turns chilly, let's head inside.  This Toco Toucan at the St Louis Zoo was showing off his wonderful beak and beautiful bright eye for me.  Remember that moving from the cold temperature to the warm interior of a building can cause water v***r to codense on our equipment, especially our lens.

I recommend leaving your gear in your bag from your car to the building to avoid this happening.  Going to the buildings first and then going outside will eliminate this problem.   If like me, you forget and things do fog up, don't waste time wiping it right away.  Just be patient and let the equipment adjust to the inside temperature first.  Then if you still have fogging, you can clean it off.

Male lion at the Denver Zoo taking advantage of the heated rocks in this exhibit.  The Benson Predator Ridge exhibit has multiple locations to photograph the lions from.  It makes it easy to get a nice background and to take advantage of the light.  Here the morning light is coming from behind him.  I really like how it highlights his mane.

I like the direct eye contact, but the 2nd photo is cool with the profile shot.  Be deliberate with the photos you choose to use.  Don't let the subject's head and eye just randomly appear.  Make sure they are where you want him looking.  Be patient and please, please, please don't yell at them to turn toward you.

Love photographing lions with strong light that lights up their mane.  Strong side light or back light really shows up the texture.  This big guy at the is posing perfectly in this light.  Keep aware of the light and use it to get different types of photos of the same subject.

You know how much I like photographing flamingos.  Their color, long limbs and numerous textures just make them wonderful subjects.   Try getting them from all distances.   We can photograph them from many distances and using different lens to capture their variety.   Have fun experimenting with these birds.

Baby ring-tailed lemur at the . This little one is so tiny with its thin little legs that seem too long for its body. It’s always great to show a baby animal with an adult in the photo to see the size perspective between the two. Notice in the 2nd photo how cute the little one is, but we have no reference on how large it is. This one can scamper pretty quickly when not on mom’s back so make sure you use your camera's continuous autofocus to track the subject. Be patient to get the shot you want.

This baby African Elephant at the is leading the way like a baton major with his stick in his trunk. Midday light is often so bright and harsh that I try to avoid it if possible, but here in the San Diego area, there was enough haze to soften it some. The high angle of the light still brought out the texture of these elephants. I also like the contrast of the baby’s size with the full sized elephant to really give perspective on the difference. Photographing them together shows off how small the little one is.

Big smiles from the African Lion at the . Ok, maybe not smiles, but fantastic yawns and snarls from the big guys. We talk a lot about focusing on the eyes and making eye contact with our subjects. What do you think of these 2 photos? One has the lion’s eyes and the other has his eyes hidden from view. Are the eyes important when the lion is putting on such a cool display for the camera? Either way, sharp focus is key to making these photos pop from the background. The overcast day created a flat even light that shows up the texture of the fur, but did not create distinctive shadows.

Baby elephants like this one from the are the cutest things. This one is covered in hay because all the larger elephants are messy eaters and dropping it all over the little one. Many exhibits like this one have elevated walkways. If the animals are too close, all you can get is the top fo their heads. To get a more eye level photo, move to the far end of the walkway and/or wait for them to move further from you. This is one time that being a little farther away can make your photos better.
