World, meet Elanor Brandyfoot Jimenez McKamey (Ellie for short and when she’s being sweet). It’s been such a blessing having a new addition to our home and getting Nash a little sister. If you’re thinking about adding another to your household, here are some tips that have helped us along the way:
1) be patient, especially with potty training
2) don’t yell at your older dog if they growl; they’re establishing boundaries and learning how to be a sibling
3) crate train, but make sure you reward them so they aren’t afraid of their crate. Remember, it’s a tool not a punishment
4) don’t take away things that your older dog enjoys, instead start doing them with your puppy too (walks/play time/kisses and treats)
5) establish a 1-2 hour potty routine, even in the middle of the night to avoid accidents; she’s now going out every 2-3 hours after 3 weeks together
6) give yourself grace too, it’s a hard job being a dog parent but so so so rewarding.
We are still learning though, so if you have any additional tips, we’d love to hear them!
