WOW. This weekend, Earth was hit with a massive geomagnetic storm, the likes of which the planet hasn’t seen in many decades. Auroras became visible as far south as Texas and Florida. The auroras here in Colorado started off rising over the northern horizon, but quickly grew and stretched overhead!

I drove north to Golden, then proceeded into Boulder, and finally up into Estes Park. The aurora was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Witnessing the colors and dancing with the naked eye was something I had only dreamed might happen here in Colorado.

This first batch of photos from this weekend’s Aurora display was 100% . I ran out the door and grabbed my camera case, but forgot my 5D lenses at home in the rush 😅.

“Corona” One of my priorities shooting this week’s total eclipse was to capture as many features of the sun as I could with my set up. I really wanted to capture prominences, diamonds, and especially as much of the corona as I could. This shot is a composite of 5 different photos, allowing as much detail of the corona to be seen as I was able to capture.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

“Prominence” - One goal I had during the solar eclipse was to capture more features of the sun than I had in the past. I shot mostly at a wider angle, hoping to catch more of the corona. I was surprised to see so many prominences appear! They were so large and bright that you could even see them with the naked eye.

Shown here are some of the largest prominences I was able to see. The ones that appear at 3 and 6 o’clock were pretty consistent the entire eclipse. The large ones I was able to capture at 9 and 1 were really spectacular to see.

“Totality”

Thursday afternoon, I picked my kids up from school and we immediatley began our nearly 1,000! mile journey to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Having been witness to a few eclipses before, I was excited to spend 4 minutes and 16 seconds in Totality!

This would be our second eclipse within a year, as we travelled to Roswell for the annular eclipse. This would also be our second total eclipse ever, as we camped in Grand Teton for the 2017 eclipse.

The solar activity this time around made sure to keep things interesting. We were able to see many prominences and features that couldn’t been seen during any of our past eclipses. The corona also seemed much more active, stretching out much more than I was able to see in 2017.

If you look closely, you can see prominences at 3 and 6 o’clock on the sun. I’ll post some higher speed images soon that show them in more detail.

Thanks for looking! And as always, feel free to share :)

Total Solar Eclipse from Ola, Arkansas.

Ola sits about 45 miles north of Hot Springs, and was one of the towns closest to the centerline of totality. We were able to witness four minutes and sixteen seconds of totality!

This time lapse is straight off the scope. No edits!

Better pics coming soon!

I woke up at 3:30 am to find the sky covered with clouds. Undeterred, I set up my camera and telescope anyway. Luckily, the clouds broke just after the peak of the eclipse and I was able to get a few good pictures!

We had some clouds and haze here in Colorado alllll night. But luckily there was enough of a break at the peak of this morning’s to let some color shine through the clouds. Took this shot from my backyard.
