How Lorikeet Creative is heading into this next week! We recently did a portfolio shoot with the roller skating extraordinaire! MJ not only has all the moves, he also spreads positivity and confidence through his community work with skating. For this shoot we wanted to capture some of that positive energy on camera and played with long exposures and light blurs. This made the incredible venue look like an absolute time warp. We had an absolute blast and can’t be happier with the shots. Thanks to everyone who made this shoot possible! Who wishes they were hiking up to instead of working this Monday? 🙋‍♀️ At Lorikeet Creative we always enjoy a good hike and usually have at least one camera on hand to capture the moment. This shot was actually taken YEARS ago but we just recently found the roll of film and developed it. There’s something special about reliving memories preserved on film rolls you forgot about.

Happy from Lorikeet Creative. We figured posting something green would get us some good luck! This photo was taken at the . If you follow us you tend to see a lot of photos from there. Why? Well because it’s one of the best places to test new equipment or techniques. If you want to shoot in the blazing sun with a new mirrorless canon, you can do that. If you want to shoot indoors and fine tune the new macro, you can do that. The botanic gardens offer so many different environments for photography and we will always go there to test something out rather than experiment with paying clients haha. This lets us hone in our skills in a low pressure environment and dare we say…have some fun too.

When the film photos are finally developed! Here are just a few scans from our film photography outing to the gardens. Our head of photography took these shots and she’s been obsessed with capturing the mist in the tropical conservatory. The way light plays with mist creating a mysterious feel, especially on B&W film, is just a joy to photograph.

When commissioned for professional photo shoots, Lorikeet Creative is usually asked for digital color images on our modern mirrorless cameras. We of course happily provide this to clients, but we love to sneak one B&W roll of film in when we can. There will always be something so special about the images captured on film and our clients usually end up loving the film photos even more.

Are you even a real creative media agency if you don’t post about doing film photography one day out of the year?

Our head of photography started her creative career in a high school film photography class and our head of videography/ceo is completely self taught on film as a medium (his classes were all digital). A day shooting together is always a blast seeing what one knows and the other doesn’t and what technical topics they both wonder on.

And no, we will not be developing these in less than one hour… we are not a Walgreens in the 1990s.

Wondering what we do when we aren’t posting on social media? Well usually cameras, subject matter experts, and documentary filmmaking is involved. Lately we have been working on something special for the University of Colorado Boulder. We can’t share too many details yet, but here’s a shot from filming last week.

Our producer Madeline’s favorite part of filmmaking is actually conducting interviews with SMEs or VIPs. It’s great to meet new people from different walks of life but thinking about what questions to ask to strategically get the story of camera is her favorite challenge. During these interviews Madeline actually thinks back to all the previous interview done for a project. “We’re trying to build connections to eventually create a compelling storyline. If one expert mentions the need for talent diversity in successful teams, I then ask team members in a later interview what different roles and talents of their team have. I then ask about how they work together for a common goal. I try to avoid flat out leading those being interviewed but if I see a path of connection between two groups being interviewed, I tailor my questions towards strengthening it.”

We missed our post this week! It’s ok though because we were filming on location for an awesome project most of the day. In today’s post we are looking at depth of field manipulation through aperture changes in macro photography. Here we have two photos taken with the same 100 mm macro lens. The only difference between the photos is the aperture size. The first photo has a large aperture and shallow depth of field. The second has a small aperture but deeper depth of field. A simple definition of depth of field is what part of the photograph is in focus and what illusion of depth do we perceive in this two dimensional photo. In the first photo with a shallow depth of field our attention is instantly drawn towards the stone of the ring because everything in front of behind it has lost its detail through aperture manipulation. In the second photo a lot of attention still goes towards the stone but we can now see detail of the table in front and behind the stone. The depth of field is much deeper. Personally, we prefer the shallow depth of field for something like ring photos at a wedding. It places all the attention on the subject (the ring) and usually that’s what a client wants for these shots. A deeper depth of field has its place though! If we were to add more wedding items to the shot (maybe a perfume bottle or necklace) the deeper depth of field would allow us to capture more details and start to build a much more complex composition.
