Throwback to walking among the golden aspens in Telluride. We took the gondola all the way to the top with our mountain bikes before I realized my back brakes had broken. It was a long trip down with some beautiful stops for some drone fun!

Our first day of driving ourselves around Kruger National Park was overcast and rainy. We stopped at a rest area and our social butterfly Kelsey made friends with a South African couple coming back from the bathroom. They had heard that there was a pride of lions eating a buffalo not too far from here.
“Would you like to follow us?”
Of course we did. A few wrong turns and a short detour to watch a leopard in a tree later we saw the lions. The head of the pride was watching over them as the ate. The rest all crowded around the carcass and you could hear the gnawing and crunching over the rainfall. The cubs bellies were full as they sauntered past. I could barely look away from the fallen buffalo but each time I did it seemed like more lions would appear out of the savannah and head over to get their fill. This was the first time I had seen a lion in the wild and I was blown away.

Over the course of the next few days we saw lions twice more. Once Richard (our tracker) hopped off the vehicle one day and headed into the brush to track them. We heard a loud growl. “We need to find Richard!” but Sam seemed unperturbed even though he confirmed that they were growling at Richard. We saw two lions run past a minute later. We picked up Richard.

Our final day of safari we headed out farther than we had ever been before. Sam knew of a pride that had been spotted out that way. As we approached Sam pointed to a pack of impalas and told us to listen. They were making a noise that sounded like radio static signaling to one another that the lions were nearby. As we rounded a corner we saw two lions mating. Then Richard started signaling and another male lion had killed an impala. We drove over and were about 10 feet from the lion eating an impala. I was shocked that he barely acknowledged us at all even though we were so close to him. One of his eyes was cloudy, his face was covered in blood and once he looked directly at me and I inhaled sharply. It was a fantastic way to end our safari. @ Kruger National Park, South Africa

Giraffes are the tallest animals in the world. Yet they, like all the other animals of crazy colors and patterns, blend into the surrounding brush flawlessly so you really have to look for movement while you are driving around to see anything. Our trip started as 6 women in a rented van self driving through Kruger National Park keeping our “eyes out!” Each animal we spotted caused an absolute ruckus in the car. The brakes would be applied and we would maneuver into the best position to see whatever animal it was. The squeals, gasps, oohing and aahhing in unison was hilarious. This was often followed by a round of shushing so that we wouldn’t scare off whatever wild animal we had spotted. Almost every time we would see one animal more would begin to materialize out of the brush or become visible to our untrained eyes. They are all entrancing in their own way but giraffes are beautiful creatures to behold. The way they are graceful and awkward at the same time makes them fascinating to watch. We were lucky and saw several over our two days of self driving even though they are quite skittish and generally ran away when we stopped. Our favorite was “Gi-Gi” who let us admire her while she foraged for quite some time until Kellisa dropped a water bottle, broke the trance and she disappeared into the trees.

Lake Dillon is beautiful at all times of the year but fall is spectacular. I was coming back from a real estate photo shoot in Breckenridge and decided to stop at the lake for some drone fun and then ended the day with a run around the lake. There are great paths to run or bike on, logs and benches to reflect on and plenty of rocks to skip.

Renee: “Where are the rhinos Sam? Can you take us to them?”
Sam (our guide) kept driving and quietly said “Yes, I can do this.”
Richard (our tracker) started making hands signals that Sam followed. He stopped after a while and said, “If you see the rhinos, this will make you happy?”
“Yes!” we all exclaimed in unison.
“Ok, let’s go.”
He took off his jacket, grabbed his rifle and hopped off the jeep. We didn’t realize we were going on foot. “You must do exactly as I say,” Sam said. We crept in single file after him while Richard followed behind us. This was the first time we had been on foot in the African bush. My heart was pounding recounting the leopards and lions we had seen tearing flesh off of animals and with the anticipation of seeing my first rhino. After about 10 minutes of tiptoeing he pointed and through the brush we started to see them materialize. We moved a bit further and more appear. There were 5 in all. They have poor eyesight and even though we were 40 feet away they couldn’t see us through the brush. One started staring directly at us and Sam picks up a leaf and tosses it in the air to see the wind direction. “This one knows something’s not right.” Sam has a unique, sarcastic sense of humor and it is hard to tell when he is joking, but this time he was not. “Everyone pick a tree. That one is mine.” We exchanged nervous looks and giggles. I marked the direction of one just in case but he led us back to the jeep without incident instead.
We noticed the rhino’s horns have been shaved down to nubs. This is done in many reserves now to cut down on poaching and does not hurt the animal if done correctly. Rhinos are murdered for their horns and have become critically endangered by a thriving market in Vietnam and China, used as a traditional medicine believed to cure everything from hangovers to cancer. The horns are made of keratin, the same protein found in human hair and fingernails, and there’s little evidence that they have curative value for anything.

As we pulled up to the tree the leopard completely ignored us. He was focused on his kill. He had dragged the impala into the tree to keep it safe from predators. We watched in awe from 15 feet away as he wrenched meat from the bone and heard the crunch through muscle and tendons.

As the sun set on this amazing sight we started to hear the hyenas. Their manical “laughing” sound froze us all in our open air vehicle in the middle of the African plains. They started to pop out of the surrounding savannah and slowly circle the tree. The scavengers were waiting for impala scraps to fall to the ground. This was the only time I saw the leopard look up and then try to drag the impala further into the tree.

Watching raw pure nature this close up was incredible. This was one moment of many jaw dropping experiences. And I couldn’t have asked for a better crew of amazing and hilarious friends to go on this trip with. Definitely more pictures and video to come!
