The moment → the memory. When I captured this moment, I showed the back of my camera to Marta and her hand flew to her mouth and she gasped: “Oh my god, she looks like an angel.”

Yeah. She really does.

She was not having it. Not the dress, not the poses, not a single silly face I made, not even the bubble machine!

And I loved every second of it.

Because when toddlers stop trying to be “good for the camera,” they start just being themselves. That’s when I get the real stuff: the giggles, the meltdowns, the way she looked at her mother like she hung the moon.

You don’t need a cooperative toddler. You just need to trust the process.

Toddlers don’t take direction. They take over.

And somewhere in the chaos, between the meltdowns, the hatred of her dress, and the very loud opinions about where she was and wasn’t going to stand, she looked at her mama like she hung the moon and I got the shot.

This is why I never panic when things go sideways. The real photos were always hiding in the mess and the chaos.
