During the day, you can't find a parking spot at many of the trailheads in Rocky Mountain National Park. At 2am is a very different story and a view that most people miss.

Badlands in black & white. I learned photography from my dad developing film and making prints in our basement darkroom. My photography world was black and white back then. Today, black & white is much more of a secondary thought for me, but I still love its simplicity and expression.

I had timed my recent trip to Badlands National Park to coincide with the new moon and hoping for some clear night skies for Milky Way photo opportunities over the formations. Unfortunately, only one night provided a small shooting window before clouds started rolling in. Exposure blend of two images at 15 seconds for the sky and 2 minutes for the foreground.

A cold morning provided a nice early morning layer of fog over the lake. The American Avocet provided the silhouette.

Badlands National Park, SD. It was raining early this morning, so I did not rush out for sunrise. There were also clouds on the eastern horizon, but then a window opened and for about 20 minutes when there was light on the formations and Yellow Mounds.
