A copper company built a town so remote it's not really on the way to anywhere, and it still runs one of the biggest mines in Arizona. ⛏️🏔️

Bagdad sits tucked into a high desert canyon in Yavapai County, a genuine company town built entirely around a massive open-pit copper mine that's operated continuously for over a century. Its remote location, well off any major highway, has kept the town almost entirely dependent on the mine for its existence.

Terraced mine benches are visible on the hillside above modest company-built housing, a straightforward, unglamorous arrangement that's kept this isolated mining town running far longer than most of its more famous counterparts.
