This is the year of practicing what I preach.

TAKE MORE PHOTOS WITH YOUR DOGS.

Not of your dogs. WITH your dogs.

My heart dog, Starsky, died a month ago. Starsky was a once in a lifetime dog, my best friend, and soulmate. I am so grateful for every single photo I have of him, and with him. I’m especially grateful for the photos of the two of us that I had done with professional photographers.

There’s something about the way a professional captures your relationship that’s special. A professional photographer specializes in capturing emotion. They can photograph the rawness and emotion in your relationship with your dog that a selfie just can’t.

Even having done several sessions with Starsky throughout his life, I wish I had done even more. I wish I had done one in the past year.

New Year’s Resolution: Have a professional photo session done with my dog(s) at least once each year.

So far in 2023, Ginsburg and I have had two sessions, one with and one with . We have other photographer friends too and plan on supporting them throughout the year as well.

As a photographer, I love supporting other photographers. As a dog mom, I love having beautiful photos of my dogs and me.

I’m glad I got to photograph during the Northeast autumn this year! I love the aspens in the West, but it was also nice to see the rainbow of colors back home 🍁

Plus a hike with Poseidon and Loki? I’ll take it!!

(Well, home-ish. This was during a visit with family in Southern Ontario! I’m from New York.)

I wanted to offer Christmas photos this year (and I still might) but my car has been in the shop for 3 weeks and there hasn’t been much snow!

Good thing Archie’s parents planned ahead during their September mini session! How cute is this little guy in his Christmas bandana? 🎄

Starsky and I were meant to be together.

I was looking for a rescue Golden Retriever when I was searching for a dog. But then I saw this goofy hound dog on Petfinder. There was just something about this dog — I had to meet him.

I applied and followed up with his rescue Empire Animal Rescue Society (EARS) and learned a little more about him. He came to EARS by way of a Pennsylvania shelter, where he had been surrendered because his owner’s new baby was allergic. He had been in rescue for around 8 months. During that time, a family no-showed on the day they were supposed to bring him home, and a woman at an adoption event attempted to steal him. (Shout out to his amazing foster mom for chasing down the thief!!)

I think the universe was just waiting for me to graduate and be ready for my dog. Starsky and I connected immediately and he had been my rock ever since. Everyone who has met him knows that there is just something special this dog has.

This is why I’m proud to be part of the Empire Animal Rescue Society family and I’m proud to raise money for them today. EARS gave me the most special dog ever, the soulmate I didn’t realize I needed.

They also do some amazing work to remove traditional barriers for pet owners. EARS works to provide community health clinics to help people afford veterinary expenses after adoption. They also have a partnership with a local federal prison where inmates train dogs to make them more adoptable and enrich the dogs’ lives and their own.

Empire Animal Rescue Society isn’t just a pet rescue. It is truly a holistic pet adoption organization that focuses on the wellbeing of pets AND their people.
