Porsche's and Gliders!
Anyone who knows me outside of the photo world knows I'm an avid car guy. I was lucky enough to grow up around classic cars and racing my whole life. Before I could walk I was at race tracks and car shows, breathing in the sweet smell of blown big blocks and tire smoke.
So when told me about a meet up with the local photo group and club of Hawaii at Dillingham Airfield, I had to go. I grabbed my D3100 and kit lens and jumped into my car as fast as I could and drove out to the airfield. I didn't know ANYBODY. ( This is also the day I met and ) I parked, got out and walked around. I saw other photographers hanging out, watching as owners of the cars figured out how they wanted to park. At the time I didn't know exactly what I wanted to shoot but I pulled my camera out, dialed my settings and started shooting.
After the morning meeting, as a collective, rolling shots on the runway had been requested and had began to be attempted. Rolling shots stopped as quickly as it started as airport security shut the runway down because of active air traffic inbound. Shortly after the cars made they're way off the tarmac, this single seat glider had landed and made it's way towards the garage area exactly where we had all the cars parked. One thing led to another and out of nowhere and after he stopped to deconflict the parking situation, the owner allowed us to use his glider for photos. The cars, photographers and a model flocked. π€£ This guy literally flew in to a photoshoot! It was hilarious and awesome at the same time.
I didn't want to spend too much time getting the same shot as everyone else, and I knew nothing about working with real subjects at the time and though I'm a bit introverted now, I was even more so then which made giving Kim any kind of direction stressful for me. I found a few nice angles that allowed me to get the front of the two porsche's, along with Kim and the glider in it, snapped a few frames and moved on.
