I wanted to start the new year off right with a new picture. This was a tricky one to do.
I cut a hole in two pieces of colored gels and melted the edges with a lighter. I then taped them up to two c-stands and cross-lit them.
The front was lit with purple light to match the front gel, then I lit the back with a gold light to match that gel behind the purple one.
So I wouldn't have color contamination on the eye, I used a strobe with a snoot attached. It turns out no matter who small I made the snoot, I was still getting flash on the gels. So, I just completely covered the snoot with gaffer's tape and made a tiny little hole with a pushpin. Voila.
Lots of trial and error with this one but I wanted to do something with the subject looking through colored gels, cross-lit with colored light, then use a snoot on a strobe to expose the eye.

NEW VIDEO: Episode 47 – The Cuzco Children, Irving Penn

📸 Irving Penn’s "The Cuzco Children" isn’t just a photograph—it’s a timeless window into the heart of a culture. Taken during a personal assignment in Cuzco, Peru, Penn captured two children in floppy hats, barefoot, with their hands resting on a tripod table. While on a Vogue assignment, he chose to stay and create his own work, photographing the indigenous people with the elegance and dignity often reserved for celebrities in fashion spreads.

This image, one of thousands he took, honors a way of life that had existed for centuries. It’s a testament to Penn’s belief that every person and culture deserves recognition, poise, and respect.
