The coldest air mass of the season hovers over upstate New York bringing temperatures into the negatives in many areas, including here at Delanson this morning. Despite the cold, the skies were crystal clear as Norfolk Southern's Lackawanna Heritage unit leads NS 265 on the D&H. Not a bad way to kickoff Super Bowl Sunday.

TIMBY (Trains In My Backyard)

While most homes have backyards with pools, patios, or gardens, this string of homes in Slateford, PA have an active rail line in theirs. Delaware-Lackawanna's PT-98 rolls by with 5 ALCO's heading for the Poconos after picking up a big train from Norfolk Southern. During this time period, trains were too large for the interchange point at Slateford yard, so both railroads interchanged at Portland.

A rare sight even in 2015: Gettysburg & Northern's FP9A navigates its way through scenic central Pennsylvania as it nears its interchange point with Norfolk Southern in Mount Holly Springs. All three locomotives on the short line's roster appear in this photo, as a 90+-car train awaits them to haul it back south for storage.

Built in 1957, this EMD F-unit began its career with Canadian National and it would go on to have multiple owners over its nearly 70-year life. As of 2023, #1755 was spotted at the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad, where it pulls passenger excursion trains.

Horsepower

In 2014, Norfolk Southern purchased 110 SD9043MACs from Union Pacific and CEFX that would later be rebuilt to SD70ACU's. Here, one of the 10 former CEFX units rolls by a horse stable in a snowy scene at Mt. Bethel, PA, on NS's Portland Secondary after dropping off a large cut of cars for the Delaware Lackawanna. This is just one of the many scenic photo opportunities this line had to offer during its peak in the mid-to-late 2010s.

Winter Battle

While half of the country is currently being covered in a winter storm, it's only fitting to share a snowy photo. Here, an EMD SD40-2 begins to fight the steep grade on the NS Portland Secondary with a heavy train and slippery rails thrown in the mix. This branch line is known to have grades as steep as 3% between Martins Creek and Portland, PA, and it would be a battle for this train (H76) to make it to its interchange point with the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad. This was truly the line to see older engines being put to the test in higher notches.

Still Standing

Norfolk Southern intermodal train 21M ducks under the former Lehigh Valley Railroad signal bridge after a large snowstorm blanketed Easton, Pennsylvania in January of 2016. This signal tower (and many others) was standing on borrowed time as all Class 1 railroads slowly upgraded to modernized signals. Today, unique railroad signal bridges like this are all a thing of the past.

Just Visiting

The westernmost end of the Berkshire & Eastern Railroad’s 400+ mile system lies at Rotterdam Junction, NY. On a good day, multiple sets of power can be found shuffling cars as road freight RJED (the counterpart to EDRJ) readies for its eastbound run, while RJ1 handles the local industries.

Here, former Pan Am #7523 makes a brief but welcome appearance as local power works the yard. Off to the left, RJED’s road power waits to depart east for Massachusetts over the former Boston & Maine line.

The 11th Hour

Norfolk Southern train B100 is seen just yards away from the Vermont border on a cold January afternoon. This train of trailers/containers would traverse on the former Pan Am Southern (originally Boston & Maine) and would end at Ayer, MA.

As of January of 2026, the contents of this train was re-routed on CSX's Boston & Albany route to allow double stacks and a faster transit time. Being said, the symbol B100 still exists as of now and now pulls trash and autoracks into Massachusetts.

The Junction Shuffle

Since taking over operations of the Pan Am Southern in September 2023, the Berkshire & Eastern Railroad (operated by Genesee & Wyoming) has transformed the line with drastic service improvements. This focus on reliable operations has driven impressive growth: traffic rose 28% by the end of 2024, followed by another 24% increase through the first 10 months of 2025. B&E's longer road freights, known as RJED and EDRJ, are now seeing larger trains and more frequent runs leading to unique operations.

Here, train EDRJ is seen at Rotterdam Junction as the train splits in half, pulls the first cut into the yard, then a second crew shoves the other half into the yard. For photographers, this offers a two-for-one opportunity to capture multiple sets of power in just a few minutes. Shortline railroading never fails to disappoint.

History Repeats Itself

For decades the former Delaware & Hudson Altamont Train Station sat next to quiet railroad tracks, other than an occasional shortline pass through, after the railroad deemed the 15 mile Voorheesville Running Track unnecessary in the 1990s. Fast forward to 2026 and mainline freights have returned with the D&H Heritage Unit pulling Norfolk Southern’s first westbound revenue stack train past the station as two daily trains are now expected to pass through each day. For a brief moment, history repeated itself.
