Remembering the spectacular "Gannon Event" of May 10, 2024 which produced magnificent Aurora displays across every continent. I shot this image over the Wild and Scenic Totogatic River in northern Wisconsin at 4:00 a.m. As dawn neared, freezing temperatures created a magical mist across the river which glowed under the Aurora. I was lost, truly lost. I really had no idea where I was. I wasn't sure how to find the nearest town with a hotel or a gas station. I wound up on an ATV trail for awhile before happening upon a paved county road which somehow led to a state road and, eventually, to Duluth. It was my most adventurous night of photography, and I am immensely grateful for those hours I spent lost with the sky. www.aubrietahope.com

"Moonrise at Dugout Wells", Big Bend National Park, Texas, www.aubrietahope.com. Water spilling from this well is the only reliable source of surface water in this vast desert, beyond the Rio Grande River. On a moonless night, the darkness is impenetrable, but it is not empty. I ventured here on my own in December 2024, but I know I was not alone. Mountain lions, black bears and coyotes as well as hundreds of species of small mammals, reptiles and birds rely on this well. I waited for a crescent moon to reach the base of the distant mountains and then I shot this scene. Night is my wilderness.

I shot this stretch of the Rio Grande River at Big Bend National Park last January. Everything about that evening was heart-pounding adventure for me, from the moment I scraped the cliff along the narrow entrance trail, etching "desert pinstripes" on my minivan. I remember the hot climb to the top of the canyon and my constant vigilance for rattlesnakes, cactus spines, and mountain lions. I remember searching for the ruins of the 1900's Langford cabin and finding it at last! Perched impossibly on top of a steep cliff, the view from this tumbled homestead was expansive and, I understand, defensively chosen. So I stayed to spy on the Mexican horses and cowboys splashing through the river, and I shot a vibrant twilight over the low desert and Sierra del Carmen mountains. Finally, I hiked out as fast as I could in the dark with a pocketful of flashlights. And then, because I was so scared of driving that narrow trail again, I stayed for the stars.
