I've noticed something interesting about women when we're planning their bo***ir sessions.
Some women come in knowing EXACTLY what they want.
They've got ideas.
They've got outfits.
They've got a vision.
And they're not afraid to tell me. 😂
Other women walk in and say...
“Amy, I trust you. Just tell me what to do.”
And honestly? I love working with both.
But it makes me curious about something beyond photography.
When you're doing something new, are you the woman who wants to plan every little detail... or the woman who's perfectly happy letting somebody else take the lead?

There are approximately 437 things I'm paying attention to during a bo***ir session.
And one of the sneakiest?
HAIR. 😂
Because hair has a mind of its own.
One minute it's falling perfectly.
The next minute there's one random strand stuck to your lip gloss.
Or a curl doing something questionable.
Or a piece that's somehow worked its way into a position that defies gravity.
And yes, I WILL stop everything to fix it. 😂
Sometimes I'll be looking through my camera, completely loving what I'm seeing, and suddenly...
“WAIT. YOUR HAIR.”
Because I know that one tiny strand will drive me crazy later.
So if I seem a little obsessive about moving one piece of hair half an inch... Just know there's a method to my madness. 📸

“Okay, now arch.”
“Give me a little more attitude.”
“Perfect. DON'T MOVE.”
“Now pretend I'm not here.”
And my personal favorite...
“I promise this is going to look better than it feels.” 😂📸
The things I say while directing a session would make for a VERY interesting conversation if somebody only heard half of it.
But hey... Whatever gets the shot. 🔥

Every group of women has that ONE friend whose taste you trust.
The one you send the dressing room picture to.
The one who will tell you if the shoes are wrong.
The one who somehow knows which lipstick shade you need before you do.
And most importantly...
The one who will tell you “Absolutely not. Put that back.” 😂
I love women who have a strong sense of personal style, but I also love the friends who know us well enough to recognize when something is SO us. Sometimes you need that second set of eyes.
Especially when you're deciding between two fabulous outfits.
So who's your person?

Can I tell you something that makes me laugh during ordering appointments? 😂
A lot of my ladies bring their husbands, boyfriends, or spouses along when it's time to see their photographs and choose what they want to purchase.
And let me tell you... Sometimes the person who DIDN'T have the bo***ir session is the one trying to buy half the gallery. 😂🔥
She's sitting there trying to narrow things down.
And he's over there like...
“Wait. We're not getting THAT one?”
“Okay, but I really like this one.”
“And this one.”
“Can we get all of them?” 😂
We always joke that men are visual creatures, and watching some of these ordering appointments, I can certainly see why that saying sticks around!
But here's what I love most...
She's looking at photographs of herself, sometimes noticing all the little things women tend to notice.
And the person sitting beside her?
They're just sitting there completely captivated by HER.
It's pretty fun to witness. ❤️
Ladies who've brought your significant other to an ordering appointment...

Here's something that happens when I'm photographing women...
I'll have an idea in my head.
I know the pose I want. I know the angle. I know exactly what I'm trying to create.
And then something happens that I DIDN'T plan.
A piece of fabric falls differently.
She turns at just the right moment.
Something catches my eye that wasn't part of the original idea.
And suddenly I'm thinking...
WAIT. DON'T MOVE.
Because whatever just happened?
I want THAT. 😂📸
Photography is funny that way.
You can plan every little detail and still end up loving something you never intended to create.
And those unexpected moments are part of what keeps this job interesting.

Sometimes it's the smallest thing that makes an entire look.
A delicate necklace.
A gorgeous pair of earrings.
A little sparkle against black lace.
A manicure that just happens to match perfectly.
I notice those things when I'm photographing women.
Not because every detail needs to be perfect, but because sometimes those little choices tell me more about her personal style than the entire outfit.
And I love when something as simple as a favorite piece of jewelry ends up becoming part of a photograph.
So I'm curious...
Are you a MORE IS MORE woman when it comes to accessories?

A black bodysuit?
We could make it dark and dramatic. Soft and romantic. A little edgy. Very classic. Or something that looks like it belongs in a magazine.
And that's what I love about this work.
The wardrobe doesn't necessarily decide what the photograph becomes.
Sometimes it's the setting. Sometimes it's the mood. Sometimes it's the way a woman wears it.
And sometimes I start with one idea and end up somewhere completely different. Which is probably why I can never just take ONE photograph and call it a day. 😂

I've started asking a question that I really love:
“What do YOU want from these photographs?”
Not what bo***ir is supposed to look like.
Not what somebody else would choose.
Not what she thinks I want to photograph.
Her.
And the answers are all over the place.
“I want sexy.”
“I want soft.”
“I want dramatic.”
“I want something completely different from how people normally see me.”
“I want to still look like ME.”
“I don't know yet. I just know I want to do this.”
And honestly?
That answer tells me so much more than showing me a Pinterest board ever could.
Because 40 Over 40 isn't supposed to turn 40 different women into the same woman.
I want to know what SHE wants to see when she looks at these photographs.
That's where we start. 📸
