You'll hear me say that some of my favorite pictures aren't even when everyone is looking at the camera. When the family is just happily existing together, and that little piece of time is caught matters- so much.

One of my favorite parts of every family session though happens after the camera is put away. The real joy happens then. The joy that matters.

The joy of seeing the connection of your little family together.

The joy in remembering how well they fit in your lap or in your arms.

The joy of seeing your babies on the wall every day.

The joy your babies feel, knowing mom and dad are proud of them and want to see them on the walls every day.

The joy in knowing this chapter of your story is safe. It's photographed. It's something you can pass down for years to come.

My website has told you for years that as long as there's joy, I've done my job.

I only have a few fall dates available, if you're wanting to get on the autumn color schedule, don't wait to give HGP a call!

Do I strive for a smile every newborn session? Yes.

Do my assistant and I also act like it's the first time I've ever gotten a smile during a session each time I get one?

Also, yes.

You're building something pretty incredible.

You've got a business model, pricing structure, systems, and a website.

You have tons of good info to share. You know you can provide incredible value to your customer. You love seeing your community.

Here's what your'e not going to love: YOU have to show up. On your website and your social media. Frequently.

Every branding session in customized to you. Your colors, style, brand, and prop choices. But it revolves around making sure you can show up authentically you, so your customers can feel they know you, like you, and can trust you.

A different type of newborn session! The babies were five days old when the girls and I brought them to the studio for a "newborn session". We needed a little joy and a little fun, so we celebrated the newest additions to the family.

Meet Shorty and Ollie (I don't know which is which- but the girls do đŸ˜‚). Two weeks later and they look completely different, but we're still pretty smitten with the new girls!

"A snuggle shared between mom and baby, dad earning one more smile, and the way she instinctively loved the people who make up her whole world.

Years from now, those are the memories these photographs will bring rushing back. How she felt on their shoulder, the curiosity of the two people that make up her whole world, how they get those little baby giggles when they tossed her in the air. That's why we do family session along with birthdays. Because your whole world deserves this moment together now, and many many years from now. Because these moments are the ones you want safe for years to come."

Annalaya is on the blog with SO many sweet moments.

"Jen is a wonderful photographer with true talent and an amazing eye! But more than that, she's an amazing, thoughtful human being. We absolutely loved working with her for maternity, newborn and family photos. She was extremely easy to work with, super understanding, and absolutely wonderful with my 3.5 year old and newborn. I would return to her her for photos again and again!!!"

We had a plan. A really well thought out one since they drive three plus hours for these sessions.

They'd arrive and get settled. Get some sleep (despite it being the 4th of July) and then up early for a golden hour session (that had forecasted rain).

After I got them settled into their overnight stay I left to attend an event since it was the fourth. On the way I kept eyeballing the gorgeous glowy light that we had and KNEW I would regret not turning around. So I said hi and bye to my friends and family and called my friend to say get the girls ready, I'm coming back!

Luckily, the girls know me well enough (fourth session with me!) that they were so excited and absolutely showed out so I could get some gorgeous portraits before I lost all the light.

I could bring wrong- but I do believe this is their largest gallery yet!

There are moments in motherhood that you don't realize are fleeting until they're already gone.

Right now, you're counting down the weeks until you finally meet your baby. You're imagining what they'll look like, whose nose they'll have, and what it will feel like to hold them for the very first time. Then suddenly...they're here.

The days become a blur of feedings, diaper changes, contact naps (the best feeling in the ENTIRE world), and learning this brand new little person you made. You'll spend hours simply staring at them, wondering how someone so tiny could completely change your world.

You'll memorize the weight of them asleep on your chest. The way they instinctively curl into your arms and their fuzzy shoulders, tiny fingernails, wrinkly feet, and sleepy stretches. Without realizing it, those little newborn quirks will disappear.

One day they'll stop curling up.
They'll outgrow your shoulder.
They'll stay awake longer than they sleep.

Before you know it, the newborn you've been soaking in will become an infant, then a toddler, then a little person with opinions, scraped knees, and endless questions. Then a teenager with absolutely no questions to ask.

This is why newborn photography matters. This season deserves to be remembered exactly as it was. Years from now, these photographs won't remind you of how tired you were. They'll remind you of how deeply you loved.

That's worth preserving.

I broke my cardinal rule of planning for family sessions.

If you've raised a teen, you know that even if they don't mind pictures, they are doing them for you because they love you. Even if they roll their eyes when they say it.

They're not doing them because they want to drive seven hours round trip for a very short session sitting next to their little sister to have someone tell them what to do for the duration of a session.

Really, they are there because you've promised quick and painless... besides the seven hour drive.

So when she was really feeling herself with a cute outfit, we built the rest of our "look" around her.

I struggled.

Such a first world problem, but oh I struggled. Nothing felt quite right. I also weigh more now than ever, so finding something I wanted to wear (in my colors) that would complement her outfit (NOT in my colors) was not an easy feat. Then you add in Ella being a picky kid about clothes.

I was pulling my hair out.

At the end of the day, I remembered I'm not aiming for perfection. I'm hoping to get something that can adorn my walls for years to come. We did this. I will look at my pictures and feel joy. I see love. I see the sacrifice my family made for me to be have a session with my all time favorite photographer (sorry Sarah, but I know you don't blame me lol).

I'm always chasing light and joy. The light was a little scarce, but joy was abound.

This chapter we're in is a new one: a new teen (who admittedly, has had a hard year through little fault of her own) and a tween. Our time is spent differently now. The dynamics are slowly shifting as the kids become more and more independent. This is the last session we'll do before Gemma is driving and with Ella still in elementary. They aren't perfect (dang sun never came out), but life isn't, so I'm endlessly grateful for a family that can show up and show out for mom's family pictures.

Even if I don't love what I'm wearing.
