On this day, the 3rd of May, in 1888, the name 'Kodak' was registered as a trademark in the United Kingdom, marking the start of George Eastman's venture into worldwide trading and recognition...
But what of that now ubiquitous word 'Kodak'? - well it was a name created by George Eastman and his mother using a set of letters from an anagram game.
Kodak was a word that did not actually exist in any language - but that is now recognised across much of the globe thanks to Eastman.
Eastman wanted to create a brand name that would work in many languages and that would not be mistaken for anything else (oh, and it had to have one or more K's in it - because that was his favourite letter 🤣 )
It's fair to say that, despite, the roller-coaster fortunes of his brand his created name did what it was intended to do.
