Anyone Who…
•
Anyone who has lost a loved one knows it is a very difficult thing to go through.

However, anyone who knows the truth about Christ’s love knows that death isn’t the end of one’s life.

The groom here lost his mother (my aunt) a few months before his wedding.

I had a similar experience with my father. He passed away right after I got engaged to Katelyn.

One thing I leaned on heavily during the time leading up to him dying and the time following his death was Romans 8:28 which says “for those who love God all things work together for good”. I trusted God would bring good out of it.

Sure enough, I witnessed my dad’s reversion to the Catholic faith at the end of his life. He went to confession for the first time in 10 years. He received an anointing of the sick. He received an apostolic pardon. And He received the Eucharist from his hospital bed. I have confidence He is now living in eternal paradise with Jesus.

Today’s Gospel shows us that those who live in Christ truly never die. May we place our hope in this truth, that we may find peace, even amidst the loss of loved ones.

“I am the resurrection and the life;
whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die.
Do you believe this?”

The Righteous Will Shine

Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house.
His disciples approached him and said,
“Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man,
the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom.
The weeds are the children of the Evil One,
and the enemy who sows them is the Devil.
The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire,
so will it be at the end of the age.
The Son of Man will send his angels,
and they will collect out of his Kingdom
all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.
They will throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
Then the righteous will shine like the sun
in the Kingdom of their Father.
Whoever has ears ought to hear.”
- Matthew 13:36-43

Pray Together
•
Prayer is the most important aspect of marriage and family life. In the first couple years of marriage, my wife and I would pray together at meals and occasionally at other times, though most of our prayer time was separate and individual. This year, however, we began being very intentional with praying together, bookending each day with Morning prayer/Lectio and evening prayer. Ever since we began this I’ve noticed a drastic difference in the amount of peace, joy, and unity in our home.

Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds.
“The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed
that a person took and sowed in a field.
It is the smallest of all the seeds,
yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.
It becomes a large bush,
and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’”

He spoke to them another parable.
“The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast
that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour
until the whole batch was leavened.”
- Matthew 13:31-33

Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Moses said to the people:
“You are a people sacred to the LORD, your God;
he has chosen you from all the nations on the face of the earth
to be a people peculiarly his own.
It was not because you are the largest of all nations
that the LORD set his heart on you and chose you,
for you are really the smallest of all nations.
It was because the LORD loved you
and because of his fidelity to the oath he had sworn your fathers,
that he brought you out with his strong hand
from the place of slavery,
and ransomed you from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
Understand, then, that the LORD, your God, is God indeed,
the faithful God who keeps his merciful covenant
down to the thousandth generation
toward those who love him and keep his commandments,
but who repays with destruction a person who hates him;
he does not dally with such a one,
but makes them personally pay for it.
You shall therefore carefully observe the commandments,
the statutes and the decrees that I enjoin on you today.”
- Deuteronomy 7:6-11

Behold
•
Behold God’s glory, in our sufferings and our joys, for He is good.

At a wedding I photographed this weekend, they had a Bible at the reception for people to highlight Bible verses. The first one that came to mind for me was Romans 8:28 which talks about how God works all things for good for those who love Him. This verse has been a tremendous gift to me, one that has brought me peace amidst many trials and sufferings. I encourage all to let this truth be deeply rooted in their hearts, so that when difficult times arise it can be called to mind, leading us to pray “God I trust that you can and will bring good out of this.”

Blessings without number
Mercies without end
•
“O God beyond all praising,
we worship you today
and sing the love amazing
that songs cannot repay;
for we can only wonder
at every gift you send,
at blessings without number
and mercies without end:
we lift our hearts before you
and wait upon your word,
we honor and adore you,
our great and mighty Lord.
Then hear, O gracious Savior,
accept the love we bring,
that we who know your favor
may serve you as our king;
and whether our tomorrows
be filled with good or ill,
we’II triumph through our sorrows
and rise to bless you still:
to marvel at your beauty
and glory in your ways,
and make a joyful duty
our sacrifice of praise.”

Keep Going
•
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” - St. Augustine
•
Do not remember the former things,
or consider the things of old.
I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
- Isaiah 43:18-19

By Contrast
•
Though men and women are very different, and often in marriage many aspects of the husband and wife may be opposites, we are each given unique gifts to use to serve. Also, it is in encountering the more difficult differences that our hearts are stretched and we grow in our capacity to love, strengthening the bond of marriage.

Beloved:
The end of all things is at hand.
Therefore be serious and sober-minded
so that you will be able to pray.
Above all, let your love for one another be intense,
because love covers a multitude of sins.
Be hospitable to one another without complaining.
As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another
as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
Whoever preaches, let it be with the words of God;
whoever serves, let it be with the strength that God supplies,
so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Beloved, do not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring among you,
as if something strange were happening to you.
But rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ,
so that when his glory is revealed
you may also rejoice exultantly.
