Tired of cell phone photos? That’s what I’ve been sharing lately. Traveling and visiting isn’t leaving a lot of room for editing my advanced camera photography. This morning I carved out time to edit these from our Round Butte sunset trip in Central Oregon. We have a friend that lives 10-minutes away. The friend my husband has known for 65 years. Sadly, I still have files from our transcontinental trip in 2024 I need to go through. I think that’s the nature of Nature Photography. Always having to edit more files we don’t have time for. Photos of Mt. Hood, Jefferson, and Broken Top. The sunset photo has a peak but I’m not familiar with it. It’s not a snow capped dormant volcano. BTW when my friends in Georgia asks what I miss most about Oregon. This is what I’m referring to. I said that once and I got a bewildered look in return. I was told, “We get snow every year.” And, Georgia does get snow in the mountains every year. But it melts. These have year around glaciers. The elevation is much higher too. North Georgia USA has mountains, hills, and valleys. Every place has its beauty. Sometimes you have to look through a different lens.

Pacific City extreme minus tide 2019. My last post I shared was a few days ago, 2026. This more recent extreme minus tide was -2.8. It 2019 it was -3.3 or lower. It was so low we also walked out to the boiler in Boiler Bay. I was hopeful 2.8 was low enough but it wasn’t. In 2019 we walked around the rocks. In 2026 I tried climbing over them but it was to high and the waves were still coming in. Both times we were in the same place but I had two different experiences. And, great memories of both times.

Ugh, we tried, but it didn’t quite work out. Not every photography trip goes as planned. Back in 2019, we lived in Oregon during some pretty extreme minus tides, and we managed to snap some photos. I was really hoping to come back and capture this amazing place better, especially since it’s not often visited because of the dangerous conditions. In 2019, the water receded enough that we could walk around the rocks safely. When I heard about the extreme minus tides this morning, we got up at 2:30 a.m. Why? Because you want to catch the low tide as it’s going out—it’s much safer that way. But the tide wasn’t low enough for us to walk around. I tried climbing over and dropping down, but that wasn’t safe. Too big of a drop. My husband looked for a way, but it just wasn’t going to happen. Timing is everything in photography, and sometimes it’s just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Pacific City was our favorite spot while raising our three kids. We absolutely loved it. But today, we had to face the reality that things change. It’s changed a lot. We no longer live in Oregon and this is probably our last visit.

What a wonderful day! Our son was so kind as to drive us to a spot he discovered last September. It was a fantastic view of several dormant volcanoes along the Cascade Range. Then, he drove us to a place we absolutely adore with a lake and a view of Three Fingered Jack. Finally, my boys were so sweet and stopped at one of my favorite Oregon waterfalls. It was a bit too sunny there, for great photos. I just wanted to say that our son drove, and his driving skills are truly amazing. Some of those roads are not for the faint of heart! He decided to take a shortcut and followed where his phone said to go…it was an old road that I think was used as a hiking trail. But we made it.

We moved to North Georgia 4.5 years ago. We are on or sixth transcontinental trip across the USA. This trip our granddaughter had two special events in the PNW.

Smith Rock State Park, Oregon. We reconnected with old friends—the kind you just pick up where you left off. It was a lovely visit, even if it was brief. We left Central Oregon and will be staying with another daughter for two weeks. We didn’t hike much at Smith Rock; you don’t have to. I sprained my ankle, and my husband hurt his knee. Those are the signs we’re getting older, sigh. We’re both getting better with rest. After Smith Rock, we tried our hand at rock hounding. There’s petrified wood if you can find it. Again, we couldn’t do much hiking. Instead, we drove to the top of the hill. What a view! Unfortunately, the clouds were low, and we couldn’t see the dormant volcanos. We’re not sure how much photography we will be doing. We’re planning on visiting some more friends.

Oregon was so welcoming! We’re spending a couple of days with my husband’s oldest friend, who we’ve known forever—since kindergarten, in fact! It’s amazing to think they’re both 70. Our friend lives near a spot where you can see nine of the dormant volcanoes in the Cascade Range: Adams, Hood, Jefferson, Washington, Bachelor, The Three Sisters, and Broken Top. We got a lovely sunset, though it wasn’t quite as dramatic as we’d hoped. We finally saw some color, which was a treat after all these years. There are so many spots where you can see multiple snow-capped mountains. These are just quick cell phone photos, so there wasn’t much time to edit them.

Palouse Falls, Washington State. I’m sharing cell phone photos from 2019, 2020, and 2026. The falls haven’t changed how much freedom to hike around has. My first time there, I was really curious and wanted to see the falls from below. After we left, I looked into how to do that, but I didn’t find any hikes online. A year later, we went back for sunrise, and there were huge signs about fatalities. We were the only ones there for sunrise, so we decided to explore, keeping in mind the dangers. In photo 12, if you zoom in, you’ll see a trail on the left. That’s where we ended up. We followed the footpath to the top of the waterfall, and then we decided to follow the slight path on the side of the cliff. I’m terrified of heights, and I think I was a bit foolish for going for it. Inch by inch, with both of my hiking poles, we walked carefully along the edge until it was time to descend the loose Boulder field. That was even scarier! We made it down around the time other people showed up at the overlook above us. The problem was that we had to do everything in reverse. Going up the Boulder field wasn’t as scary as walking along the cliff edge. I was very relieved we found ourselves at the top of the waterfall again. Whew!!! We made it. When we walked back to the truck, we saw workers installing fences. This week, when we visited Palouse Falls, there were fences everywhere, and there was no way down. Honestly, the view at the bottom wasn’t worth it. The viewpoints at the top are better. That memory is definitely one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done. My husband says, “I loved that hike!”

Steptoe State Park in Washington State, captured in cell phone photos. I’ll edit the complicated camera photos whenever time permits. I’ve been dreaming of visiting for ages! Our daughter and family are just a 2.5-hour one way drive away. They’re moving to the East Coast, and this was my final opportunity to see it. Steptoe Butte State Park Heritage Site is a National Natural Landmark, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the farmlands, mountains, and states around it. What a view! Steptoe Butte is a quartzite island that juts out from the Palouse hills and can be seen from miles away. As we left we discovered a TV commercial was being filmed in the area.

If you spot a cat wearing a harness pulling a propane bottle, it’s probably ours! Since so many people have asked about our cats, I thought I’d share the story of the kitty with the personality. This is what you do when traveling across the country with your pets. He was abandoned and adopted us. He loves his people and can’t stand being separated. I think it’s the trauma. I think he LOVES the outdoors so much that he puts up with a lot. So, we have to hook him up where he doesn’t get tangled up. Hence the propane bottle. We call him our dog-cat. He walks with his leash. He only tugs when he really wants to go over there to check for critters. He’s a hunter.
