A fall day on the Fred Woods trail! A couple decent vistas and some massive rock features make for a beautiful walk in the woods anytime, but especially with the fall color!

Man, it’s been a minute since I’ve busted out the telescope to shoot any deep space astro like this. Had a few clear nights around the new moon last week so I decided to shoot a few hours worth of exposure on an old favorite, the Andromeda galaxy.

Pitchoff cliffs. When I parked at the Cascade trailhead along 73, there were stunning open views of the foliage along each side of the Cascade lakes. In the time it took to gain the roughly thousand feet of elevation to hit the cliffs on Pitchoff, the whole area ended up socked in with clouds 😅 guess that’s just how it goes in the mountains sometimes. I’ll definitely hike this one again in the future to catch the view on a clear day

Lower Cascade Lake, Owen Pond & Copperas pond. Stunning views all around. Stopping at the Cascade Lakes is mandatory for any ADK trip, and the short hike out to the ponds from 86 makes for a really pleasant walk through the woods. I really dig the view from Copperas looking toward Whiteface, and I’m thinking the south-facing campsite at Owen would make for a fun astro spot next summer 🤔

The hike up Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge made for an incredible autumn day in the mountains! Couldn’t have asked for nicer weather! The foliage was hitting just right this year. My favorite view from Giant was looking out from the east slide at a sea of colorful treetops. RPR offered phenomenal views all around, with my favorite looking toward Lake Champlain and Vermont. Definitely a tough climb to earn some fantastic views.

This trip put me at 12/46 high peaks!

Awestruck. Sunrise from Giant’s Nubble on Saturday morning was an absolute treat. The Adirondacks are always beautiful, but this one was really something else.

Heart Lake views from a couple weeks back. I’m seeing posts all over IG of the foliage looking absolutely wild right now, can’t believe the change! I’ll be back up tomorrow evening to catch a sunset from Mt. Jo looking out over Heart Lake!

The Blackwell Triple Crown, with a few side quests. 20.1 miles, 4,032 feet gained 🥾

This hike has been on my radar for a while, finally picked a nice day and committed to it!

I parked at the Rattlesnake Rock access area shortly after sunrise and began my first ascent of the day on the WRT. I arrived at the first vista at the right time, with the mountaintops just beginning to peek through the dense cloud inversion. This moment offered a spectacular view of Gillespie! Really set the tone for a gorgeous day. I sat and enjoyed the view for a while before continuing up the WRT.

When the WRT intersected with Bohen, I stuck to the WRT for a bit longer to see the next vista. It’s a seasonal vista that’s pretty overgrown and obscured at the moment, but it makes for a nice view down the gorge in the winter months after the leaves are down. I doubled back to head down Bohen Run and took another side quest to get close to the waterfall. It was barely a trickle, but still a peaceful spot. Jerry Run was practically dry as well.

From there I proceeded through Blackwell and north on the Rail Trail to reach the familiar Johnson Cliff staircase. After a quick snack break at Quiet Quarry, I knocked out my next ascent and enjoyed the view up top. I stuck to the MST until the intersection with Stone Quarry trail and decided to pursue another extra view along the MST that I’d seen marked on a handful of maps. It turned out to be a good one! I doubled back and headed down Stone Quarry to revisit the Rail Trail.

Only the Gillespie climb remained. After reaching the top, that view hit very differently than it usually does. A triple crown circuit around Blackwell makes you really appreciate these mountains. I looped down the back side of Gillespie out Big Run Road to get back to Blackwell and unfortunately missed closing time at Millers’ General Store by like 15 minutes, so I’ll have to head back some other time to get a sticker and a milkshake. Heading south on the Rail Trail made for a nice wind-down walk after a long day in the woods. Lots of great views and I couldn’t ask for better weather on an early autumn day!

Hurricane Mountain views! After making my way back down from Big Owl, I approached Hurricane from the north side. The beautiful trail took me past the Gulf Brook campsites before beginning the gradual ascent up the mountain. The views from the top were breathtaking, especially from the fire tower. I sat up here and soaked it in for a while before I headed back down to shower and grab a bite in Lake Placid.

I’m already itching for another ADK trip, I’ll be headed back up in a few weeks to catch some fall foliage! 🥾
