I could watch horses graze in an open field for hours, especially during a sunset.

If anyone can provide this simple joy in life for me please reach out.

Seriously.

Firefall Yosemite National Park 2025

I found out about this stunning natural phenomenon a couple years ago and it immediately went to the top of my bucket list. Photographing this special event was just the challenge I have been wanting for a while.

Planning this trip to see Firefall at Yosemite NP, which only happens once a year in February for a 2-3 week timeframe was risky. There were no guarantees it would happen, that the sun would hit Horsetail Fall through the clouds at exactly the right angle during sunset to light it up for a handful of minutes or seconds in a rare display of nature’s ineffable beauty.

What I can tell you is that the risk, the time, the money and the challenges were worth it. This trip for me was a success, regardless of whether I captured an epic photo of Firefall or not, because I went for it. I needed this adventure to remind myself that I can do hard things, that I am capable of dreaming big, having great adventures and creating stunning images.

Who wants to come with me next year?

As promised, here are the images that made the Awaken gallery exhibition. It took many hours of culling down images to get these final few in hopes that it would tell an intriguing story and awaken something in each of you.

The beautiful mystery of photography is how the same images can be seen by many and yet invoke completely different emotions or interpretations of how those images came about. I lived this adventure. Now you get to decide what story these images stir up in you.

Just in case you were feeling sad that I didn’t get to see the sun very much while in Alaska, here are a few sunsets I got to witness on the road.

So picture this…

You ride a train to a trail. Then you hike to a lake with floating icebergs from a melting glacier. You packraft on this Titanic level cold lake in and around these icebergs. Then the lake turns into a river full of rapids for the next 14 miles. It’s so foggy sometimes that you can’t see the rapids 20 yds in front of you but you can hear the rushing river getting louder as you approach. And you do all of this with numb hands and feet, shivering because it’s raining the entire time and your clothes are fully soaked.

Do you push through or do you call it a day?

Oh I almost forgot to mention that you’ll also see two moose mysteriously run through the fog, lock eyes with you as you float by and then disappear again into the fog just as quickly like a magical centaur.

The blueness of Alaska and it’s many forms of water was something I didn’t quite expect. I thought sunsets at 11pm meant the sun would shine brightly until the last possible moment everyday. What I mostly saw were cloudy skies & rainy days. Although that felt like a set back from what I had imagined, it actually was a gift. I saw landscapes in new ways and got comfortable feeling uncomfortable (mostly cold and wet) to get epic shots I couldn’t pass up.

Having to check my expectations at the start of each day was a good challenge. Alaska doesn’t make it easy but it’s worth the struggle.
