In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, let me introduce you to this incredible woman: my grandmother. Some know her as “Wilda” or “Dr. Arnold,” but we know her as Ma. Ma makes the best rolls you’ll ever taste, and when a carrot cake comes out of her kitchen? Get ready to hear angels sing.
I remember standing on a stool by her stove as a kid on the Saturday mornings after we’d spent the night. She’d patiently show me how to scramble eggs just right—with plenty of salt and butter.
You’d never know she’s taught hundreds of nursing students, smuggled Bibles into China, wrestled a baboon in Africa or served in the 9th Ward after Hurricane Katrina. She’s humble like that, and always more interested in the person in front of her than anything else. When I’m a grandmother, I want to be like Ma.
Who are you celebrating this ?
