Eclipse day turned out to be a dream come true for all of us. The crystal clear skies we hoped for did not materialize and we had an influx of high, thin clouds to contend with. Nevertheless, our view of the eclipse was unencumbered and was still stunning! It was awesome beyond words to watch the approaching umbral shadow as it enveloped us first in purple and then near full blackness. There was a ring of orange twilight around the horizon. Venus and Jupiter burst into view. The solar corona was bright and beautiful beyond description. Five prominences were visible to the eye and appeared bright pink in color. This is my second expedition to view and photograph a total solar eclipse and it is just as stunning and emotional and extraordinary as the first. It is really an awe-inspiring experience that I wish everyone could experience.

Images captured with Canon 7D Mark II, Canon EF 100-400 L IS USM with 1.4x Extender EF for an effective focal length of almost 900mm.

This was the view last weekend walking the boardwalk that meanders along the Currituck Sound in Duck, North Carolina. I could tell that the cloud deck was going to factor into an awesome sunset so, while walking the boardwalk, I took photo after photo until well after the sun had gone down. The beauty of the location was incredible beyond description.

A close friend of mine, who is a gifted writer and published author, wrote this lovely poem to accompany this photo I captured in the Outer Banks of North Carolina last weekend. Beautiful work, Jana. Your writing moves and inspires.

The silent flow of timelessness,
Whispers between the sea and shore,
Echoes of nature's playfulness,
Into divine art molded and poured,
Coaxing my soul out of its dwelling,
Into serenity beyond all telling.

This is a 180-degree capture of the expanse of Double Arch in Arches National Park, Utah. I hiked up into the arch so as to be directly centered underneath both arches. The large size of the arches makes it difficult to photograph the whole thing even with an ultra-wide rectilinear lens. I, therefore, used my 8-15mm fisheye set to 10mm to capture the full expanse. I find looking at the arch from this angle not only impressive, but naturally very aesthetic.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon EF 8-15 f/4.0 L Fisheye USM set to 10mm, f/9.0, 1/500 sec shutter speed, EV -0.67, ISO 200.

Sand Dune Arch, Arches National Park, Utah. This is an ultra-wide close view of the arch captured with my 8-15mm Fisheye lens set to 9mm creating a near-180-degree view of the arch and surrounding area. It is an impressive arch located in the midst of a bed of sandstone rock fins and is easily accessible from the park road via a quarter-mile round-trip level trail. This arch is well worth exploring.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon EF 8-15 f/4.0 L Fisheye USM set to 9mm, f/9.0, 1/60 sec shutter speed, EV -1.33, ISO 200.

Early morning view of a portion of Canyonlands National Park from the Island in the Sky District. I did some hiking alone in the Island in the Sky District after I finished photographing Mesa Arch at Sunrise. There were literally no people around anywhere. It was a beautiful, bright but very cold day and the early morning panoramic views of the Maze Section were fantastic!

Turret Arch, Arches National Park, Utah. Captured in the late afternoon, this view of Turret Arch was several miles to the west of the arch at 400mm to compress perspective against the La Sal Mountains and to heighten contrast between the red rock of the arch and the snow-covered mountains.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM set to 400mm, f/9.0, 1/400 sec shutter speed at ISO 200.
