Feral Hogs in Louisiana: A Growing Threat

Louisiana's beautiful landscapes face a significant challenge from feral hogs. These animals cause extensive damage to both marshland and crop areas, contributing to the state's ongoing land loss crisis.

Destructive Impact

Feral hogs were introduced to Louisiana centuries ago, and their population has exploded. They cause over $70 million in agricultural damage each year. These hogs root and wallow, destroying crops and disrupting natural habitats. In marsh areas, their activities exacerbate coastal erosion, an issue already threatening Louisiana's wetlands. While not the sole cause of land loss their impact is substantial. For reference, one hog creates around 20 times the damage that one nutria causes.

Hey everyone! 👋 One of our Southern Raised Aerial Imaging drone pilots made a pit stop at the Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou Visitor Center in Raceland, LA, and it was awesome seeing our images from the Blessing of the Fleet on display! 🤩 If you're ever passing through, it's totally worth popping in to soak up some of Lafourche Parish's rich history. Being based right here in Lafourche Parish, we're super proud of our home and its many traditions. Come check it out! ⚜️

Louisiana's Cajun Bayou

Wondering what is burning in Cut Off, LA? One of the Southern Raised pilots noticed the fire and got on the road to capture it. Even with all of the smoke from the fire, our thermal imaging cameras were still able to see right through it. We did not capture many color images because of the lack of visibility underneath the smoke, but our thermal cameras show exactly what is going on underneath.

Our drone maintained a safe distance from the smoke and fire to prevent any further hazard!

The other night, a pilot at Southern Raised Aerial Imaging got a call: a deer recovery. We jumped at it, driving about an hour to a client's location, hoping to assist with our thermal drone. After a brief flight, we spotted the deer. It was still alive, but with a serious wound. We GPS-pinned its location for recovery the following day.

The next morning, our client headed out, but the deer had moved, and they couldn't find it. A second call brought us back to the search. We scoured the area with no success until we flew near a bayou. There, on the other side, a thermal image appeared – it was the deer! We won't go into graphic detail, but it was truly impressive to see how this animal managed to swim across the bayou. The deer was recovered that day.

This experience, is a testament to the power of our top-of-the-line drones, enabling us to find what's hidden from the ground.
