I was at the museum the other day, and one of the work exhibited referenced ‘La Jetée’, a French black and white sci-fi film from the 60s, directed by Chris Marker. The 28 minutes long short, except for one scene, was told entirely through still images.
-
If you image search ‘La Jetée’ on the web, you’ll find about a dozen images people commonly picked to represent the film. But what about the hundreds or so others-they all have part in telling the story, are they worth less because they don’t show up in a search engine?
-
Only recently I started to appreciate the importance of supporting images; images that perhaps don’t feature the primary subject matter, but provide contextual detail to round out the story.
-
When you have a model on set, with beautiful wardrobe and makeup by the team, it is tempting to always make he/she the focus. But try turn the camera the other way from time to time, and maybe you’ll find an even more beautiful, magical moment.

How to define my style? Like many creators, it’s a challenge trying to summarize what I do in an easily digestible blurb. However, sometimes the answer really is right under one’s nose.

For the past 10 months, I’ve been collecting images while watching movies, as an exercise in understanding framing (check them out in the IG highlight: ‘MOMNT’) I didn’t over-analyze when grabbing these frames, working solely based on instinct. Now looking at the collection, I’m starting to see a pattern:
- - -
- wide shot of landscape or interior, with no people or people simply as accessory
- people deeply absorbed in mid-action, often not engaged with the camera
- an overall sense of mystery and anticipation
- - -
‘Romantic Realism’ is my attempt at describing my current photographic style/art direction: a curated, idealized world that is grounded in reality.
-
Relating back to my own work, in the last couple shoots, I’ve been putting more focus on building the scenario around the model. Having a great model is essential, but lately I sense a bit of fatigue on the idea of portrait; rather than just producing an objectively good looking headshot, I want there to be room for interpretation. I guess what I’m getting at is I want to produce photographs of a ‘character’, rather than a ‘person’.

For me, photography is not just about getting THE PHOTO; we have all seen photos that are deemed iconic by the public: such as Dorothea Lange’s ‘Migrant Mother’, but these photos all started out as part of a body of work—I doubt when Dorothea took the shot, her goal was to create an image that will stamp her name in the history of American photography-she simply did her job as a photographer, capture what she sees through her perspective and skill.
-
On , we are constantly in pursuit of the THE PHOTO; one that will collect the most ‘likes’, one that will gain you the most followers, one that somehow will be favored by algorithm. The performance of a single photo determines your worth on the platform. But is this mindset healthy? Is pleasing the masses really the ultimate goal?
-
I’m not leaving , but I am pursuing alternative platform/method to better showcase my work. Trained under architecture and graphic design, I enjoy sequence building and creating extended experience, things that are disadvantageous when your window of exposure is, literally, a single window on someone’s crowded feed. I need to further distant myself from the pressure of THE PHOTO, and focus on creating a body of work.
-
So that’s what Kaleide is about—an external space that will house the majority of my work moving forward; as to exactly what form and shape it will take, only time will tell.

Who is the masked murderer?... Is he the long lost evil twin brother? Split personality? Is it all a dream? I’m sure you can name a teen slasher with any of the above revelation.
