A fun and productive weekend at camp in Potter Co with around 7-8 inches of snow up on the tops. I got my first snow deer after a 10 minute staring contest. I was waiting for a better shot and when what I thought was a doe never moved, I sat down and got a solid rest on my knee. I took the neck shot at 120 yards, dropping it in its tracks. I was surprised to find it was a buck that had already shed its antlers, perhaps just in the past day or two. I also cut some fresh bear tracks and we had a different bear run through the camp yard as well as spotted some nice bull elk.

Today’s grouse hunt turned into a woodcock hunt which then turned into a pheasant hunt. We drove a couple of hours north...

Today’s grouse hunt turned into a woodcock hunt which then turned into a pheasant hunt.

We drove a couple of hours north to explore a new area first thing this morning and had 9 grouse flushes in our first spot. They were jumpy and Appa wasn’t able to pin any down for me to get a shot.

We moved into our next cut where we flushed 10 woodcock. Appa had a handful of solid points and I definitely should have hit more than just one. It was the first time I’ve found a migrating flight of woodcock and it was so much fun watching Appa with an abundance of birds around.

We broke up the drive home with a stop at a stocked pheasant field where we bagged our first rooster of the year.

Appa covered 20.4 miles across 5 hours and 40 minutes of hunting.

Opening day grouse in PA! We only hunted a couple of hours as we are both recovering from the last week truck camping and chasing grouse in the Maine north woods. We found 3 grouse and connected with my only shot of the day.

After 5 weeks and over 6,800 miles, I am back home in PA. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite photos over the next several days/weeks but I’m going to start with my most memorable fish! I was looking forward to targeting a new species and I wasn’t disappointed with the cutthroat I found in a few different rivers and one alpine lake.
