Is this what Friday feels like?! 😎It is to us!

An F-35 maneuvering and pulling hard enough that the wings wring water out of the air and turn it into a rainbow. No filter. Just speed and physics and freedom.

This is the Lightning II — Lockheed’s fifth-generation fighter, and the one on point for the Air Force, Marines, and Navy right now. A-model off a runway, B-model that can hover, C-model off a carrier. More than 1,300 delivered. Over a million hours flown. About twenty countries also flying our plane. The name goes back to the P-38 Lightning from the last world war, which is also one of our favorites!

This summer she was all over the 250th. Formations down the Mall. Navy and Marine variants in the July 4th mix. Guard units doing flyovers closer to home bases.

Sticking with the theme of the last few days - Red barn in a wheat field.

Barns came before houses for a reason. Grain needs a dry place. Animals need shelter. Tools need to stay out of the rain. Food stores need somewhere to winter. You can sleep in a barn, but its hard to eat from an empty pantry.

American barns started unpainted. Then, farmers mixed linseed oil with iron oxide — cheap rust that sealed the wood and kept mold off. That’s the red. White trim came later, when the good paint went on the edges and the working color stayed on the walls. By the time commercial paint was widely available, the color had been established as tradition and continues in many places across the country.

🌾Harvest is in - a good day in the Valley.

We love the epic battles, close calls, monuments and founding documents of America at 250 - but maybe even more than all that - she's also this: another year the ground yielded its bounty, and another evening worth stopping for - to reflect and give thanks. The freedom to slow down. To soak in the blessings and be grateful for God's goodness to our land and our families. We’ll take the color and the empty rows harvested and call it a win.

Wheat has always been the backbone. Bread. Flour. The things a country cannot do without.

“For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land… a land of wheat and barley.” — Deuteronomy 8:7-8

Columbus brought seed on the second voyage. The Spanish made it take in Mexico. English colonists planted it on the Atlantic side. Out here, the Hudson’s Bay Company put it in the ground in the 1820s so Fort Vancouver wouldn’t have to wait on ships from England. At one point it was legal tender in Oregon. By 1870 the Valley was pushing two million bushels. Gold camps needed bread. Portland became a wheat port.

America sits among the world’s top producers and ships a huge share of what it grows. This year marks two hundred and fifty years of soil, weather, and people who kept planting.

And we think we can do even better going forward - getting the toxic chemicals out and returning to natural farming, decreasing regulation to encourage more local farms, and getting rid of taxes so we ensure the family farm can be passed down and thrive for future generations.

We love and are fascinated by the scenes of agriculture in our home state and Valley. Here, August light falls on a combine outside . One frame in color. One in black and white.

We've come a long way in 250 years farming this continent - from farming by hand and horse to modern machines which are far more efficient.

A good hand with a cradle scythe might cut a couple of acres in a day back when the Valley was first settled. A modern combine can take that much in 30+ minutes and finish what used to take a whole crew a week, in just hours. Same fields. Same August race against weather. Completely different machines.

We eat so well because somebody is still out here doing it. Grateful for that — for the farmers who keep the Valley working, and for the food that reaches the rest of us because they do!

Late day summer sun in the . Sun dropping behind the oaks on a rural homestead.

This is the kind of scene that makes us reflect on why people risked so much to claim a piece of this land.

The Donation Land Claim Act of 1850 offered something almost unheard of: 640 acres to a married couple if they lived on it and worked it for four years. About 7,000 of those claims got patented — more than two million acres, a lot of it right here. They came for the soil, the water, and the oak savannas. Open ground you could plant. Trees already standing for a house, a fence, and shade at the end of the day.

Two frames of the same hour. Wide, so you feel the land. Tight, so the house and the oaks hold the sun.

Bad Robot! Put the car down! Here's a quick series of something a little more wild and whimsical, which seems fitting on a late summer Friday...And it's also fitting today to pay homage to the late great Peter Cullen, who made us all love a giant robot and aspire to be better leaders (and people) through his characterization of Prime.

THIS...is Robosaurus.

America is the place where such a wild idea can actually get built.
The skills exist. The investors exist — even for something this off-the-wall. And the audience is big enough that you can make a living showing it to people.

Doug Malewicki was an aerospace engineer. Illinois steelworker’s kid. Apollo work. Stanford. Also the guy behind Evel Knievel’s Sky Cycle. Then a coworker said: build a real Transformer. Make it a dinosaur. Make it breathe fire. Make it eat cars.

So he did.

Two years. About $2.2 million. Forty feet tall. Thirty-plus tons. A Cummins diesel and hydraulics strong enough to lift a junker five stories, crush it, and torch what’s left. Pilot sits in the head. When the show’s over it folds into a legal trailer and rolls to the next town.

We love that America is a country that will fund such a wild - making it possible for kids (and the kid in all of us) to see a real life fire breathing robot Dino eat a car!

Since yesterday was National Dog Day, we're allowing ourselves two more :).

Happy National 🐶Dog Day — here's a look back at our girl Fenix when she was still all paws!

She’s two now, but these were from her first studio session, when she was already acting like she owned the place. We were always dog people - but after our childhood dogs passed - life happened, and it'd be nearly 20 years till we got ourselves our current pair of Rotties. Now, we couldn't be happier with this breed and the fantastic family dogs they are for us and the kids!

Rottweilers go back more than 2,000 years, to the drover dogs that marched with Roman legions. Later they were the butcher’s dogs of Rottweil — herding cattle, pulling carts, and guarding the money. When that work vanished, the breed nearly did too. America helped bring them back. First U.S. litter in 1930. AKC recognition in 1931. They’ve stayed in the top ten ever since, and for good reason in our opinion.

Their look is fierce. And partly...That’s the point. Wathfulness and presence are how they protect their people and their home. Raise them well and you will get a family dog that loves kids, is loyal to a fault, and still makes a stranger think twice. You’ll never feel safer on a walk than you do next to a big Rottie!

🇺🇸 Glad America had the heart to bring this wonderful breed back!
