Silhouettes don’t come out of your camera in glorious color. ✨

Straight out of camera, silhouettes usually look flat, muted, and a little disappointing. But with the right editing, you can pull out the depth, drama, and glow that was really there.

This one was taken in Southern Spain while I was teaching the Andalusian Escape with Shelley Paulson. The scene was already stunning — horse, rider, sunset. But the edit is what brought it to life. 🌅

So if your silhouettes don’t look magical right away, don’t panic. That’s normal. Editing is what transforms them from “meh” to “museum-worthy.”

To get this shot, I marched straight down into a bog. Yep—ankle-deep, squishy mud, the kind that makes you rethink your life choices. My shoes were never quite the same again. Worth it.

Because here’s the thing: straight out of camera, silhouettes usually look flat, muted, and honestly kind of “meh.” But with the right editing, the glow, the drama, and all that fiery sunset magic finally show up.

Pro Tip:
Expose for the sky, let your subject fall into shadow, and don’t freak out if it looks dull at first. Editing is what transforms it from “muddy” (pun intended) to magnificent.

The internet is a highlight reel… so here’s a peek behind the curtain.

Even after more than a decade of photographing pets, I still have nerves before every shoot. I still question if my style is “good enough.” I’ve never walked away from a session thinking it was 100% perfect.

Sometimes harsh light still trips me up. Sometimes I compare my work to other photographers and spiral. And sometimes I wonder if my clients can see me fumbling behind the scenes.

👉 The truth? These things don’t go away. You just get better at moving through them.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re the only one still struggling, you’re not. Every pet photographer I know wrestles with some version of this. The magic isn’t in making the struggles disappear, it’s in building the confidence to keep shooting anyway.

What’s one thing you still struggle with in your photography? Drop it in the comments 👇

When the forest hands you a runway…🌿

Aspen didn’t need a fancy studio or props, just a fallen log in the middle of the woods. With palmetto leaves acting like built-in stage décor, this little slice of Santa Rosa Beach, FL turned into the perfect natural set.

Sometimes the best locations aren’t planned, they’re stumbled upon (literally).

Pro Tip:

Use what nature gives you. Fallen trees, branches, and leaves can frame your subject, add depth, and instantly make the shot feel intentional and polished.

Save this for your next outdoor shoot—you’ll never look at a forest floor the same way again.

A rich, thick, velvety European hot chocolate is always a good idea, unless you can have a chocolate martini. Then choose that.

The best hot chocolate I've ever had? The one from that first video at a rifugio around the backside of tre cime di lavaredo in the Dolomites. What about you?
