🪨 **MEDICINE ROCK STATE PARK, MONTANA — WHERE THE SPIRITS WERE SOUGHT**

Hidden in southeastern Montana, Medicine Rocks State Park is a landscape of strange sandstone formations, sculpted by wind and water over thousands of years. But these rocks hold something more powerful than their unusual shapes — they hold deep cultural significance for Native American peoples.

🌿 For generations, Indigenous peoples, including the Northern Cheyenne, have regarded this area as sacred. The rocks and surrounding landscape have been associated with spiritual practices, prayer, and vision quests — journeys undertaken by some Indigenous people seeking spiritual guidance, understanding, or a deeper connection with the natural world.

👁️ Imagine standing among these towering stone formations, surrounded by silence, sky, and open prairie. Long before this became a state park, people came here with beliefs and traditions that connected the land to something far greater than themselves.

**This isn't just a strange geological landscape. It's a place where nature, history, and spirituality meet.**

☠️ **A GOLD RUSH TOWN. A HANGED SHERIFF. AND A WILD WEST TOWN THAT TIME LEFT BEHIND.**

📍 **BANNACK, MONTANA — THE GHOST TOWN THAT STARTED A GOLD RUSH**

In 1862, gold was discovered along Grasshopper Creek, and within a year, Bannack exploded to more than 3,000 people. Prospectors arrived hoping to strike it rich, saloons filled with miners, and Montana's frontier came alive.

But here's where the story gets dark…

🤠 **Bannack's sheriff, Henry Plummer, was accused of secretly leading a gang of outlaws responsible for robberies and murders.** In January 1864, vigilantes hanged Plummer and several alleged members of his gang. The full extent of Plummer's guilt remains debated by historians.

🏚️ Then the gold boom faded. New strikes drew miners away, the territorial capital moved to Virginia City, and Bannack slowly emptied. By the 1950s, the town was effectively deserted.

Today, more than 50 historic buildings still line its lonely streets — old cabins, saloons, stores, and other remnants of a dangerous chapter

Long history.. poor farms and paranormal activity in Iowa.

👻 EDINBURGH MANOR — THE HAUNTED FARM OF IOWA

Hidden in the Iowa countryside sits Edinburgh Manor — a massive brick building with a history that is darker than its reputation.

Long before the manor existed, this land was home to the Jones County Poor Farm, beginning around 1850. The farm housed poor, elderly, disabled and mentally ill residents, who often worked the land in exchange for food and shelter. More than 80 deaths are documented by some historical sources, while the current owners cite more than 230. (Iowa PBS)

In 1910–1911, the original poor farm was demolished and replaced by Edinburgh Manor. The building continued to house the poor, elderly and people with mental illness for nearly a century.

Then, in November 2010, the doors finally closed.

And that’s where the story gets REALLY interesting…

The building was left with personal belongings and documents behind. Since then, paranormal investigators have reported hearing unexplained voices, footsteps and music, seeing apparitions, and experiencing strange activity throughout the building. One of the most frequently reported figures is a little girl, while other stories involve a woman in white and a man associated with a former patient death. (Odyssey Paranormal Society)

Are these spirits?

There’s no scientific proof that the building is haunted.

But after more than a century of poverty, illness, death and institutional life inside these walls…

Edinburgh Manor certainly has a history that gives the ghosts a story to tell. 👻

🥷 **TOGAKUSHI — THE NINJA CONNECTION YOU PROBABLY NEVER HEARD ABOUT**

Deep in the mountains near Nagano, Japan, I found a place with a surprising connection to Japan’s legendary ninja.

This is **Togakushi** — a remote mountain area famous today for its ancient shrines, massive cedar trees, and dramatic mountain landscape.

But there’s another layer to the story…

Togakushi became associated with **ninjutsu**, and the area’s mountain temples and difficult terrain helped create an environment where martial arts, religious practices, and specialized training could develop.

The **Togakure-ryū** tradition is traditionally traced back to this region and is one of the best-known schools associated with Japanese ninjutsu.

And the landscape makes it easy to understand why.

Steep mountains. Dense forests. Hidden paths. Remote valleys.

This wasn't a movie set.

I was actually walking through the mountains where the **Togakure ninja tradition** is said to have developed.

🥷 **But that's not even the most interesting part…**

The connection between Togakushi's ancient religious culture, mountain asceticism, and the later ninja traditions is much more complicated than the Hollywood version of a "ninja."

And standing there, surrounded by centuries-old cedar trees, it felt like stepping into another Japan.

⛏️ BURKE, IDAHO — THE TOWN THAT HAD NOWHERE TO GO

Burke wasn’t built on a wide-open valley.

It was squeezed into an incredibly narrow canyon in northern Idaho — so tight that the town had to build up, over, and around the railroad and the river.

And then things got REALLY crazy…

🏨 The famous Tiger Hotel was built directly over the creek.

🚂 And the railroad ran right through the heart of town — literally passing through the hotel complex.

Imagine living in a mining town where a train could rumble through the middle of the buildings while the creek ran underneath them.

Burke grew because of silver mining, but its geography became part of the story. The canyon was so confined that there simply wasn’t much room for streets, businesses, homes, and the railroad.

Today, Burke is largely abandoned.

But standing there, you can still see why this place was so unusual.

A mining town trapped between a mountain, a river, and a railroad.

And this is exactly why I love exploring places like Burke — the landscape itself tells the story. 🏔️⛏️🚂
