As you know, I started my photography with foal handling. I am still a foal hander and barn manager for Majestic Friesians Horse Farm and my daughter has also become quite an amazing foal handler. I have found that gaining a solid relationship with a mare is key to bonding with and general handling and training of a foal. This c**t was born to a maiden mare and we never know how protective she will be over her foal but this mare showed is immediately that she not only tolerated our presence but encouraged it. From the photos you can see how relaxed and trusting she was of Mali and my presence with her and her foal. In fact, after I took these, we moved into the center of the pasture when her c**t got up to nurse, giving them space. When he had his fill, she walked him over to us as we sad in the pasture. He started engaging with us and she watched for a moment, then walked a few feet away and grazed on grass. Almost as if to say to me, "I watched over your girl, now you watch over my boy so I can get something to eat." She stayed within 20 feet while he played with us, learning lessons about personal space and how good it felt to be scratched and loved on. We spent a few hours with them like that, he played, romped, drank and slept in the warm summer sunshine. I hope you enjoy these photos, a reminder of how hard work and patience can pay off and what a privilege it is to work with these amazing horses.
Photography is still my passion but foal handling is in my soul.
