When I graduated from high school, all we had were senior name cards. For those of you who remember, they were simple white or cream colored cards that had your name on it. It may have your class rank, but that was it. We thought we were big stuff handing those out to fellow classmates and graduates. And look at us now.

It didn’t start trending in 2020. It didn’t become real when it became federal. And it definitely didn’t need validation to matter.

As a Houston native, Juneteenth has always been Freedom Day. A Texas truth. A reminder that even in freedom, we had to wait… two and a half years for it to reach us.

Let’s be clear:
This isn’t just history. This is our history. So yes, we celebrate.

But we also remember what it took to get here.
