5 years ago yesterday our little man joined our family through foster care. It was supposed to be temporary placement. I knew as soon as I held him I would fall deeply in love and would have a hard time giving him back. But that’s what we signed up to do.

I had to work at night a few hours after we picked him up and this was me and him snuggled up in my room as soon as I got home on that super rainy night. I will never forget how this moment felt. It’s the moment I fell in love and it’s the moment I knew I’d do anything for this perfect baby boy. I cried for him. I cried for his mom. I cried for us in the future when we figured our time with him would end.

It’s foster care awareness month and I’m here to say that if you ever so much as given foster care a moment of thought, I encourage you to get involved in some way. Supporting foster care doesn’t mean you have to foster a child. You could offer respite care for foster parents. You could donate to the organizations that support foster children and foster parents. Mentor a teen. Educate yourself.

It’s one of the hardest things we’ve ever done, but it’s also probably the most rewarding. These children need people with big hearts to step up for them. They didn’t choose these situations. Foster care is messy, challenging and heartbreaking. But it’s also rewarding and painfully beautiful.

Oli is my reminder that everything that is meant to be will be when I step into God’s will and get out of my own way. His plan is way more perfect than even my wildest dreams and our two youngest children are irrefutable evidence of that.

I can’t imagine our life today if we hadn’t said yes to foster care… other than maybe I’d be more rested and have fewer wrinkles 😉

Baby Lily's parents were the sweetest. Not only had their entire week been a whirlwind from Daddy unexpectedly being allowed to come home for her birth and making it just in time but she also got baptized and they got newborn AND family photos in as the last thing that happened before dad left for the airport. I feel honored to have been able to be a part of that very special week for them
