Once nearly lost from Tennessee’s forests and fields, the wild turkey has made a comeback across the state. However, recent trends have shown declines in turkey numbers in some areas of Tennessee.
Seeing behavior like this is always welcoming, especially because we need more successful broods and young birds on the landscape. Healthy forests, native grasslands, clean water, and protected nesting habitat all play an important role in the future of this iconic species. Continued conservation and proper habitat management will be important in ensuring wild turkeys remain a part of Tennessee’s natural heritage.
