Sometimes I forget how beautiful our neighborhood gets when a storm moves out around sunset. Today’s storm reminded me as I looked up from a busy day and saw the fog rising off the soaked fields of crusty snow. The beautiful golden light glowed beautifully in that fog, if only for 20 minutes or so. It made for a nice distraction and a good reason to go out.

I’ve been shooting family shots of Avery since 2018–maybe longer. Once, during Covid, there was a trampoline involved. Last year she and Cole hit that point…”Dad, c’mon…we’re too old for that”. Honestly, they were such great sports for not opting out sooner, but Rob and I were bummed and drowned our sorrows in extra football (shoots usually competed with Sunday’s other big events).

Those Fall family shoots were always great fun (even without a trampoline, and the Thompsons were always fantastic subjects—cooperative, gracious, and genuine. This year it was time for senior pictures, and Avery brought that same energy. Watching kids grow up is one of the best parts of this project. Cheers Avery—no doubt you’ll do very well at whatever is next.

Just remember: family photos make great Fathers Day gifts when you and Cole are ready again. 😉

New York cityscapes from earlier this week. These were taken from the 23d floor of a building on 7th between 52nd and 53rd during a storm that flooded subway tunnels and basement apartments, claiming at least two lives. Later I would walk a little more than a mile to catch a train that was delayed by the storm. I was frustrated about being soaked, and waiting— the smallest of inconveniences, not realizing the true scope of things. Perspective is important, especially now. I will reflect more…and figure out what to do with that perspective.

When your clients bring the creativity…

Jess and Chet invited their friend Jason. And no, that’s not ai or photoshop. And yes, it was an engagement shoot.

More later.

…Happy Halloween! 🎃
