Timing is always important to consider when it comes to photography, especially when little ones are involved. Timing can be the difference between a frustrating session and an enjoyable, memorable photoshoot.

So when is the best time to have your family photo session?

• After a meal: make sure children (and adults) are well-fed before the photoshoot. If they’re hungry, they might start to get a little antsy and cranky. If you’re planning on going out to eat after the photoshoot, give your kids a snack before the session and pack a few extra snacks just in case.

• Whenever your kids are well-rested: nothing makes kids more grouchy and uncooperative like being tired. Be sure that your photoshoot doesn’t interrupt any of your kids’ nap time or bedtime routines.

• Approximately 1.5-2.5 hours before sunset: I’ve found the best time for natural lighting (for the way that I shoot) is 1.5-2.5 hours before sunset or 1 hour after sunrise. However, if neither of those times is ideal for your children, let me know. Experienced photographer’s can shoot beautiful photos at any time of day.

When it comes to in home sessions, I promise you that your home is perfect.

I’ve photographed in homes with toys scattered everywhere, half eaten toast on the counter, and laundry baskets in every corner. I’ve walked into rooms low on light and full of lived-in chaos and still created something beautiful.

Because it’s not about perfection. It’s about you. Your home. Your baby’s first space. The real life happening within those walls.

The cuddles on the couch. The toddler peeking into the bassinet for the tenth time. The dog sniffing the baby’s head.

That’s the stuff that matters. That’s what makes the photos feel like home.

4 tips for a stress-free photo session with your kiddos:

1️⃣ Prep your kids in advance: Tell your kids about the photoshoot well ahead of time and tell them what to expect. Let them know how excited you are for it and why your family is doing it.

2️⃣ Let them be involved: Include your children in the planning process. Ask them what colors everyone should wear. Help them pick out an outfit, either from their closet or at the store. Children are much more willing to participate when they feel involved.

3️⃣ Bring backup: Bring along a change of clothes, plenty of snacks and water, diapers, etc.

4️⃣ Make it fun: Make photoshoot day a special occasion. Plan on doing something fun after the session so they look forward to the outing all day.

You haven’t missed it.

Even if you’ve got a couple of weeks left.
Even if you’re exhausted.
Even if you feel like you’ve left it too late.
You can still get maternity photos.

There’s no rule that says it has to be done by week 28 or 32 or whatever rule you’ve got in your head.

Some of my favorite sessions have been with women in that final stretch, when everything feels real and raw and so close.

When you’re going crazy with all the waiting and the unknowns and the impatience has well and truly kicked in.

You can still book it then. You just have to do it.

Newborn sessions aren’t about capturing a perfect version of your life. They’re about pressing pause right in the middle of the messy, beautiful chaos you’re living through.

You probably haven’t slept. You’re still figuring out feeding. Your body feels like it doesn’t quite belong to you yet. And you’re holding this little human thinking, “How did we get here…and what happens next?”

This is what I want to photograph.

The tiny hands. The foggy days. The quiet moments you’ll barely remember. The love that shows up even when everything else feels like chaos.

The first moments of your baby’s life are fleeting and precious.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Booking a newborn session ensures those tiny details (their tiny toes, delicate features, and sweet sleepy smiles) are captured forever. These memories are ones you’ll cherish for a lifetime, long after the baby fluff fades.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let me help you preserve these early moments with timeless photos that will bring you joy for years to come.
