A favorite memory of mine…watching this birth unfold. Sisters holding space while making cider on the stove, a mother massaging her daughters feet, a husband bathing his wife with music, scriptures being poured over them both, and little hands eager to meet their new baby.

Struggling with letting the photos speak for themselves and explaining how much it meant for me to attend this birth. I attended Nikoles first birth when I had just started birth assisting and I immediately felt a connection to her. So when she asked me to photograph her second birth I was so honored.

Sure, you may have others. There may be more babies and more firsts, more chances to document a similar moment. But THIS birth will only happen once.

I'm here to tell you that it absolutely does matter if your birth photographer has experience IN BIRTH. Because you don't want your birth photographer learning on the day of your birth.

Now, what I'm NOT saying is that you can't give a new birth photographer a chance (I wouldn't be where I am today if several very kind mommas hadn’t given me a chance when I had not earned it). I had experience with a camera, sure. But what I didn't have was experience with little to no lighting, working for hours on end with little to no sleep, photographing in unfamiliar spaces with other providers you may not know but it's essential you stay in the good graces of, knowing when to step out and when to come back, and what to do when any of the aforementioned situations changes abruptly and sometimes all at the same time.

It's...a lot.

You need someone who is not just familiar with a camera but familiar with birth. She knows the quiet, invisible signs that a mom needs space. She sees a need and steps in. She knows when not to speak or carry on. She mainly hovers and stays to the outskirts of the room. She engages gently when appropriate, with a soft encouragement. She brushes a hair out of your face and she offers you water when everyone else has forgotten you need it. She prays silently over you as you reach the end and when you finally give birth she’s quick to wipe away the tears so she can see what she’s shooting. She ensures you are taken care of after as well before she leaves you with your new little one. And then she rushes home to smile at her screen while she edits your sneak peak, hoping to get it to you within a day or two.

Or maybe thats just me, I don’t know.

But THAT is why you need an experienced birth photographer who YOU connect with. It goes far beyond knowing the ins and outs of a camera.

Hey there! It's me, Amanda. If you're imagining any of the funny reels that go along with my name don't worry, me too. 😂

The last year of my business truly felt like surrendering a huge part of myself. The logistics and struggles of running a business overseas took a huge toll on my momentum and confidence. But like all things, God is working behind the scenes. He knows when the next client will come, when I'll need to trust Him to sustain us, and when I'll need to step away again (whether it's my choice or not).

But for now, I’m going to take the opportunity to lay it all on the table and pray that the births come my way because I desperately miss it. So “Hi!” Read a little about me and let me know in the comments, if you saw my ramblings, what stands out to you the most and what we have in common!

And know that if this was rough to read, it was even rougher to write. And that’s because I’m a photographer, not a writer, and I wrote this myself instead of employing chatGPT (which would have been worlds easier and faster, but 0% fun).

Summer is winding down as we trade long nights and slow mornings for busy schedules and all things fall… let’s capture who your family is right now.

Sun-kissed skin, bare feet, and the favorite summer outfit they’ve worn on repeat. The toy they bring everywhere. The big kid suddenly too cool for photos…but still willing to laugh when Dad puts them on his shoulders (IYKYK).

Maybe your family is still holding onto summer with watermelon, beach days, and chasing each other until the sun goes down.

Maybe fall is already starting to sneak in. Favorite football jerseys, changing routines, and new interests taking over.

Let’s capture it all.
