Someone just asked me how to get into the photography business. Here's what I passed on:

My number one tip is to start out with his prices where he wants them to be and run a "model call sale" or whatever sale he wants. That way once he's established, he doesn't have to RAISE prices. He just has to stop running a sale.

2 - learn to shoot in manual or at least one of the programmed auto modes like SHUTTER PRIORITY so his photos won't be blurry.

3 - start a Facebook business page, invite friends and family, run a contest to share his page and win a "free" session.

4 - start an incentive program - I give out $10 in free prints for referrals - he could give a few extra digitals or a free 8x10 or whatever for any referral who completes a session with him.

5 - I used to print out ideas for my shoots until I got used to it - he could save ideas to his phone or use a Pinterest board for inspiration.

6 - For weddings, I HIGHLY recommend tagging along to shoot some unpaid first, then as a second shooter, to get an idea for different camera settings, how things flow, how to direct them, posing, etc. Weddings are hard. The lighting changes indoor to out, etc. It helps to get experience first.

7 - Facebook ads are actually pretty cool. You can pay $5 to "boost" your post and a lot more people see it, and if even one books, you make your $5 back.

8 - He needs to decide on a business model. I'll try to find an article - but he can charge a sitting fee, then charge extra for digital copies and print copies, or he can include them in his sitting fee, or he can charge nothing up front and have a "minimum purchase" to make his money on the back end. Lots of options.

9 - If he gets serious, he'll need to register his business name, and get a vendor's license - the Ohio business gateway can help with this. AND he'll have to file sales tax twice a year and then probably a schedule C business taxes yearly (which I did with H&R block online when I first started out, easily.)

And I'll get you some articles, tool
