Breed Feature — Cardigan Welsh Corgi

“I fell in love with Cardigans for their goofy personalities, perfect size, and elegant silhouette. They’re versatile little dogs—equally happy to lounge or hike miles—as long as they’re with you. Darwin fits the classic temperament with his quick wit and workmanlike attitude. We’re a team, and he thrives on that connection. He does differ in one adorable way: he chirps constantly, which makes sense since his mom’s name is Cricket.”

Darwin is a true all‑around worker. He earned his Trick Dog Performer title—about 30 tricks in a week—and has already started his scentwork career, earning his Novice Interior title. He’s also a multiple group‑winning Grand Champion and well on his way to his next CWCCA versatility level at just three years old.

One of his sweetest quirks is how he tends to injuries. If someone is hurt, he’ll find the exact spot and gently try to clean it, following dogs and humans alike to “nurse” them. It’s pure Cardigan heart.

His owner says Darwin has taught them patience, clarity, and the importance of responsible, ethical breeding. Their advice for anyone wanting a Cardigan: start with a breeder who is a member of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America—the best place to find dogs bred with the breed’s mind, body, and spirit in mind.

Darwin’s favorite thing? Anything, as long as it’s with his person—hiking, scent games, training, or just the next adventure together.

Breed #10 / 100 — The Belgian Groenendael (Sheepdog)

“I fell in love with the Groenendael long before I ever owned one. The loyalty, the drive, the sensitivity—every part of their personality pulled me in deeper. Belgians have always had my heart, but the Groenendael stole it completely the first time I saw one. They’re regal and elegant, yet somehow still goofy and funny in the best way.”

Ari is the definition of an all‑purpose farm dog. She’ll herd anything that moves, always mouth‑off, gliding in perfect circles around whatever has her attention. And of course, she has that classic Belgian quirk: snapping. It started as a demanding little begging behavior—so very Belgian—and eventually became a trick all its own.

One thing her owner has learned? These dogs are too smart. They predict what you want before you ask. Amazing when you’re practicing patterns… not so amazing when you’re trying to teach something new and they’re already four steps ahead on a different plan. A Groenendael is for someone who wants a dog that does everything with them—a true companion who sees themselves as an extension of you.

Fern’s favorite job is bikejoring. Running as fast and as hard as she wants under command connects her right back to her herding and message‑carrying roots. She’s a mover, effortless in harness, and she absolutely loves it.

My books are officially open for the rest of May and June, and I’m adding more spots for anyone who wants to be part of my long‑term photography project documenting the incredible diversity of dogs and the stories behind them.

I’m featuring real dogs and real stories from their owners for my 100 Breeds Project — a documentary series where I photograph, study, and share the unique traits, history, quirks, and personalities that make each breed special.
